  2. fit as a fiddle programme • £15.1 million award nationally over 5 years from the Big Lottery Well Being Programme • Designed to help older people lead more healthy, active and fulfilling lives • Age Concern England programme, working in partnership with each of the AC regions & national partners • Each region awarded £1.26m to develop own programmes – ‘Active Networks SE’

  3. fit as a fiddle – national programme Working with five national partners: • British Heart Foundation • Keep Fit Association • National Association for Providers of Activities (NAPA) • Men’s Health Forum • Blood Pressure Association Developing: • New resources for older people and professionals working with older people (DVDs, guides, leaflets, web based information) • A volunteer training programme, to support physical activity and mental wellbeing in key settings

Active Networks SE – What is it? • 4 year programme June 2008 – June 2012 • Delivery of 410 ‘Active Networks’ - • Group 12 – 15 participants 50+ • 8 or so sessions, free to participants • focus on physical activity and healthy eating • Involvement of older people in set up and running of sustainable programmes • 50 networks set up for ‘hard to reach’

  6. “Many of the members have poor communication skills, however throughout the session there were members shouting with excitement and constantly asking when it was their go.”

Outcomes • People over 50 being more physically active and involved in their community • 182 outdoor exercise networks (2184 beneficiaries) • 85 indoor exercise networks (1020 beneficiaries) • People over 50 eating more healthily • 133 healthy eating networks(1596 beneficiaries) • People over 50 having enhanced and improved mental well-being • Targets supported by recruitment of 415 volunteers over 4 years

  8. Sustainability • Self sustaining through volunteers, eg. Nordic walking, Wi, sheltered housing • Nominal charging, eg. Tai Chi • Direct to other classes in area • Partnership working, GP practice, falls prevention, Universities

  9. Structure • Programme delivery ‘3 hubs’ • Hub 1- East and West Sussex, Kent & Medway (AC West Sussex) • Hub 2 – Surrey, Hampshire, IoW (AC Surrey) • Hub 3 – Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes (AC Berkshire) • Centres of Excellence
