First mining organization in Canada. • 1892 Gold Miners Club and an association of coal mine operators formed the • Mining Society of Nova Scotia in response to a proposed increase in coal • royalties. • In 1894, CIM formed by Mining Society of Nova Scotia; Ontario Mining • Institute; and Quebec Mining Association • First President of CIM was R.   7. The core purpose of MSNS is to serve the mining, minerals and materials industries and professionals in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. We will achieve this by: • Facilitating learning and continuous professional development • Facilitating and encouraging collaboration among all constituents • Promotingthe interests and values of our industries to society • Recognizing excellence and outstanding achievements • Providing networking opportunities • Providing structure and opportunities for social interaction as a means to • effect fellowship and bonding MSNS Geology Matters 2012, Halifax, NS

  8. Society awards a deserving student from each of the four Universities in the province with a Certificate and Scholarship Medal. Donald MacFadgen Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in the fall of each year to a dedicated and deserving student in Mining and Mineral Engineering. The Frank Shea Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in the fall of each year to a student, who submits the winning thesis at the AUGC. 2012 SCholarships Geology Matters 2012, Halifax, NS

  9. Selwyn G. Blaylock Award (2011 – John Chisholm) “In recognition for his outstanding contributions to coal mining in Canada, particularly in NS.” Established in 1948, the medal honours Selwyn G. Blaylock, one of the pioneers in the mining industry in western Canada. He was president of Cominco, recipient of several international awards for his work in metallurgy, and was the President of the Institute in 1934-35. The Blaylock Medal is awarded for distinguished service to Canada through exceptional achievement in the field of mining, metallurgy, or geology.
