  1. Who Dat? Lowering Your Gaze

  2. Story of Barsisa • Had good intentions • Shaytaan’s expert tricks • One thing led to another… • Once pious man, gone astray

  3. Lowering our Gaze • Practical or impractical? • Awkward or cool? • Natural or unnatural? • Kind or rude?

  4. Principle in Action: Modesty Commandment from Allah: “…that they should lower their gaze” Principle: • Allah is telling us how to put the principle of modesty into action; both action & understanding are important.

  5. Different interpretations of ayat • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUU3zn8BAXI • “min”= take from the good and leave the bad • “min”= take the first glance but second glance is recorded • “min”= even the slightest; don’t take even the smallest look for something haram

  6. Who does this apply to? • All of us! • Need to lower your gaze with: • There is a non-mehram member of the opposite sex, including relatives! • Classmates & teachers of opposite sex • People you are attracted to • People you are NOT attracted to • “real time” (those you physically interact with) and “screen time” people (TV, youtube) • Those of opposite sex who are younger AND older than you

  7. From Huffpost: The 2nd Look “Let’s be honest; it is easy to fill up our tank with outside influences. From the pretty girl in the magazine to the romantic, handsome guy in the novel we are reading… Lust is ignited with a second look” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kristen-welch/

  8. Keepin It Halal • Keep your interactions with opposite sex halal by following “PPL”! • Public: where other people are at • Purposeful: have a reason for talking/meeting • Limited finish talking/meeting after purpose is achieved

  9. Take it to Another Level • Public: • Can be a library or a starbucks • Which is better? Why? • Purposeful: • Can include to get to know someone better or to complete a school project. • What makes either of these legit? What makes them not legit? • Limited: • Limits are relative. Someone’s limit can be another person’s extreme. • How do you measure what is an appropriate limit?

  10. From Understanding to Action “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead men from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment. And when Our Verses are recited to such a one, he turns away in pride, as if he heard them not– as if there is deafness in his ear.So announce to him a painful torment.” (31: 6-7)
