Sector policies and politics influencing to leverage know-how & funds through partnerships with public and private partners in Switzerland and at international level to develop innovative approaches/ concepts with the potential for large scaling-up to foster knowledge management in the sector, within Switzerland and at international level Four complementary intervention axes :

  6. Scaling-up = taking successful projects / programs / policies and expand / adapt / sustain them in different ways over time for a greater development impact • NGO interventions are typically small in scale but often apply new approaches • Question: how to replicate and scale-up their successful models ? • Answer: by building a NGO consortium which is deployed through the three dimensions • Horizontal: expansion of coverage / more people (from 0 to 350’000) • Vertical: creating the organizational /political framework (the more you cover, the higher level you need • Functional: going beyond one function (WASH) to include others (Education, Health)

  7. Swiss Water & Sanitation NGO Consortium CONCEPT • Scaling-up 1 program – 8 NGOs – 16 Countries – 27 Projects • Sharing of resources and know-how between the NGOs • Positioning the Swiss NGOs, visibility at international level / influencing the sector RESULTS • 305’000 persons gain access to water and 150’000 to sanitation; • 40’000 farmers gain access to clean water and low-cost irrigation systems; • 132 schools (40’000 pupils) and 51 health centres (330’000 patients yearly) equipped with water and sanitation infrastructures; • 85 “blue schools” (18’500 pupils)
