  2. Imperialism Warm-up • Recall the relationship between Great Britain and it’s American Colonies. • Predict the types of conflicts that could arise between American and her colonies if she should have them.

  3. Define IMPERIALISM: • The policy by which strong nations extend their political, military, and economic control over weaker territories. • Imperialism was popular in Europe who imperialized parts of Asia and Africa. • The U.S. wanted a part of this new phenomenon.

What reason does America want to imperialize? • Economic: Raw materials, natural resources gives edge in competition, resource rich overseas markets for excess goods! • Military: foreign bases, refueling stations for navy.(Alfred T. Mahan, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History- Hisconcept of "sea power" was based on the idea that countries with greater naval power will have greater worldwide impact) (ex. Hawaii) • National Superiority:Manifest Destiny and Social Darwinism, responsibility to spread western values!

  8. Why is it referred to as “Seward’s Folly?” • Because of the environment! • Appears to be worthless because you cannot farm but actually has good resources (Timber and oil)

Describe in detail the THREE main causes of the Spanish-American War. • Cubans rebel against Spanish rule: Want independence, rebels thrown into concentration camps, US gives sympathy and worries about their economic investments in Cuba. • Yellow Press inflames opinion: Sensational headlines/pictures that exaggerate Spanish atrocities. • The MAINE blows up: The USS Maine sent to protect Havana harbor and blown up. Spanish are accused and “Remember the Maine” become our battle cry!
