  1. Idea Generation with Design Heuristicsfor Subcomponent Design 77 CARDS

  2. Functional Decomposition BICYCLE Breaking your design down into component parts ENERGY SOURCE PROPULSION SEAT

  3. DESIGN HEURISTICS Review

  4. Design Heuristics and Decomposition Generating ideas for components of your whole design can allow you to develop ideas that you would not have otherwise

  5. PRACTICE WITH DESIGN HEURISTICS SUBCOMPONENT DESIGN Spend 5 minutes generating ideas for each of the following subfunctions a way to dispense salt and pepper: 1- pouring mechanism, 2- storage mechanism, 3- stability mechanism. A new restaurant is opening, and it is interested in unique designs. Your task is to design ways to dispense salt & pepper for diners in this restaurant. Focus on new and creative ideas, and generate as many as you can.

  6. REFLECT What ideas did you generate for each of the three subfunctions? How did using Design Heuristics impact your ideation process? How did ideating on subcomponents impact your ideation process? What questions do you have about using the Design Heuristics tool in this way?

  7. Decomposition Spend time decomposing the functions of your own design problem. Spend time generating as many ideas as you can for each of the subfunctions using the Design Heuristic cards. Spend 15 minutes generating new ideas by combining different ideas for each of your subcomponents or developing existing concepts by substituting ways to achieve subfunctions.

  8. To Have Your Own Set of 77 Cards: Design Heuristics for Inspiring Ideas www.DesignHeuristics.com

  9. MORE SUBCOMPONENT IDEA GENERATION AND DEVELOPMENT

  10. MORPHOLOGICAL CHART 1- Create a morphological chart for your design. 2- Write subfunctions in the first column and then ideas generated using the Design Heuristics for each subfunction along the row (the ideas should be drawn and described, and the table cells will be sized accordingly) 3- Create combinations using your chart, and draw the resulting idea based on the combination.

  11. PRODUCT DECOMPOSITION 1- Dissect an existing product 2- Sort the components into categories or types. 3- Each team member selects a component (or set of components). 4- Use the Design Heuristics to redesign these components or set of components. 5- Combine your concepts with your team, generating whole new ideas for the existing product.

  12. TEAMING JIGSAW 1- Generate a list of subfunctions as a team. 2- Divide the subfunctions among your team. 3- Generate concepts for your subfunctions. 4- Reform with your team and combine ideas across individuals to produce new concepts.
