Taoism • “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his [plans] fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves” • “Life is full of natural and [unplanned] changes. Don’t resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

  4. First activity • On page 147 in the book, please read under the Religious Traditions Section. • After reading, answer the following questions in your DO NOW section: • How did Taoism affect the people and how they lived?

First activity • On page 147 in the book, please read under the Religious Traditions Section. • After reading, answer the following questions: • Who was the creator of the Taoist philosophy? • A Chinese thinker named Laozi • How did Taoism affect the people and how they lived? • You should live your life in harmony (balance) with nature • You will be happy if you live a balanced life • Love nature • Simple and selfless life

  6. Taoism and Children’s Stories • On the handout, match the example of Taoism found in a children’s story to the philosophy of Taoism. • After you have matched all of the examples, on the back of your paper explain how the children’s story illustrates each Taoist philosophy.

They both have a place in the world • Oneness • Number Two • Example is how the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan at the end of the story

  9. Closure: • On the exit pass, write down what you think is the most important part of Taoism that you learned today. • When you are done, hand it in on the back table.

  10. Do Now • Copy the HW: • Section 2 quiz Monday! • Study all notes on Confucius, merit system, and Taoism. • Take out your notes on Confucius.

Historical Head Activity: CONFUCIUS • 5 pictures or symbols that represent Confucius’ ideas or thoughts • Specific and detailed • Completely colored • In the neck, for each picture explain why you chose that picture and what it represents about Confucius’ ideas about family, government, rulers, etc.
