  1. Katy Junior High Course Request 2019-2020 • 8th Grade

Course Selection Process • Course selection presentation in Social Studies classes. • Take course request sheet home to share with parents-Parents must sign the form! • Return the form, Signed/initialed course selection sheet to Social Studies teacher by Monday, Jan. 28. • I will be meeting with students in early Feb. to discuss your individual course requests.

  3. Promotion Standards • In order to be promoted to the eighth grade, a couple of things need to occur. • If these things are not in place, you will be required to attend summer school or repeat the seventh grade. • You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses • You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in three of the four academic courses: math, language arts, social studies, and science.

  4. Course Requests Overview • If you are moving or planning to move, you must fill it out anyway. • Both the student and parent must sign the course sheet. • Choose for 7 periods. All students must sign up for the following courses: 1. English 2. Math 3. Social Studies 4. Science 5. PE 6. Two electives and three alternate electives

  5. PREAP CLASSES • In order to be successful in a preap class, consider the following criteria: 1. Do you have an “A” in the academic class or a “B” in the preap class? 2. Do you have your parent’s approval? • PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses: • typically move at a faster pace • are more academically challenging • require more independent learning • have more homework than academic courses

  6. PREAP Exit Guidelines • May choose to exit during 1st 6 weeks or at the end of the 1st semester. Must have teacher and parent approval. • If the 6 weeks average falls below 70, then you will be taken out of the class at the end of the grading period.

  7. Athletics for 8th Grade • You may not sign yourself up for athletics. See your coach if you are interested in playing a sport next year. • The Coaches will give the counselors a list of students to put into the athletic period.

  8. Other Courses • Math Block- designed to help refine and review math skills in preparation for the STAAR test. • Reading Elective- designed to help improve reading level and basic reading skills in preparation for the STAAR test. • You will be recommended to take these classes if you do not pass the Math or Reading section of the 7th grade STAAR test. This class will replace your elective.

  9. High School Credits • High School Credit classes will go on a High School Transcript. A high school transcript will impact the rest of your educational career. • GPA (Grade Point Average) • Class rank • Colleges first snapshot of you • You will take a Mid-term and final exam

  10. INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING High school credit courses A student whose class rank* is in the top 10 percent of the graduating class may be eligible for automatic admission consideration at a Texas public college or university. *Class rank must be based on the student’s rank at the end of the 11th grade, middle of 12th grade, or at high school graduation, whichever is most recent at the college or university’s application deadline. TOP 10% 2019-2020 Course Catalog, pages 36-37 All semester grades and grade points earned in high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript and are factored into the student’s grade point average and class rank.

More Electives for 8th Grade • Student Aide J300 (Application required) – help in attendance office, front office, library, counselor’s office, and sometimes PE – must be willing to be placed in any of these offices • Must be highly responsible, like filing, organizing, alphabetizing, and doing repetitive tasks. • Must be reliable, helpful and able to keep information confidential • Grades and any office referrals will be considered. • You will be required to fill out an application and write a short answer. You will be notified of the topic and deadline. • Not everyone applying will be chosen for an Aide position.
