  4. Japanese Ambassador Tojo visited Germany in 1938 • Tokyo-Rome-Berlin Axis • Japan became a military dictatorship with Emperor by 1931

  5. Hitler & Chamberlain – appeasement • 1936: Rhineland • 1938: Austria & Sudetenland (w. region of Czechoslovakia) • 1938: Munich Conference • 1939 Czechoslovakia • 1939: Poland

  6. US declares Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936, & 1937 • Appeasement: to temporarily satisfy • “Peace in our time!”

  7. 1937: US stopped selling gasoline & scrap metal to Japan • 1941: Tojo became Prime Minister • 1941: French Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) taken by Japan • December 7, 1941, “A date which will live in infamy.”
