Marine Grade Aluminum 5083 Aluminum alloy has been used in shipbuilding industry for nearly a hundred years. With the rapid development of shipbuilding industry at home and abroad, the lightweight of ships has been paid more and more attention. Due to the low density, high strength, high rigidity and corrosion resistance of aluminum, the ships made of aluminum are 15-20% lighter than ships built with steel or other synthetic materials.

There are many kinds of aluminum sheets used for ship manufacturing, such as 5086, 5454, 5083, 5052, 5383, 5059,etc., for making fishing ships, yachts, small boats,etc. Due to the different using environment, the performance requirements for aluminum sheets are also different in the manufacturing process. The advantages of 5083 aluminum alloy used in the marine field lie in its high strength, corrosion resistance, plasticity and excellent welding performance. In the 1960s, since the production cost of aluminum plate, aluminum strip, etc. was gradually reduced, and it was widely used as a lightweight material. It was used to make yacht shells, hull superstructures, masts, and port infrastructure. In the chemical composition of aluminum-magnesium alloys used in marine engineering, the maximum magnesium content of 5052 alloy with low magnesium content is only 2.8%, and the content of 5083 alloy with the highest magnesium content is 4.9%. Although the strength properties of the alloy increase due to the increase of Mg content, the plasticity and corrosion resistance decrease significantly, especially for alloys with Mg>6%. 5083 aluminum sheet cannot be heat treated to strengthen, and their main strengthening method is work hardening. The processing technology is generally to undergo hot rolling, cold rolling and other processes after smelting to form a sheet, and then stabilize it to achieve the H116 state to meet the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

The commonly used tempers are 5052 t6, t651, 5052 h32 and 5052 h34 aluminum. In general, the internal stress of T6 will be relatively large, and the processing will be deformed. Marine Aluminum 6061 Marine aluminum 6000 series are mainly used to produce extruded profiles, and its representative alloys are alu 6061( mainly used in he United States and Canada) and AA6082 alloy (mainly used in European countries). AA6082 alloy is a general light structural material in Europe, widely used in transportation tools and general industries. 6082 aluminum profile needs to undergo double-base heat treatment for aging hardening. The processing steps are: billet heating→ extrusion→ direct water quenching of profiles→ solution treatment→ straightening→ furnace aging. Only by strictly controlling the process parameters of each process can satisfactory mechanical properties be obtained.

Due to the silicon alloy, the 6061 aluminum rod also has a certain wear resistance, and the hardness is in the middle, which can meet the hardness requirements in the conventional industry. It can be said that it is more commonly used in mold manufacturing. The application of marine grade aluminum sheet and profile has become more and more mature, especially for the weight reduction of the hull structure, the improvement of shipping speed, and the reduction of energy consumption.
