  2. 26 SEPTEMBER – EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES • The first European Day of Foreign Languages was celebrated on September 26th 2001, being one of the central events of Foreign Languages Year. • After the success of the first celebration, organised by the European Union and the European Council, and involving millions of people from 45 participant countries,the ministry comitee and the European Coucil decided that ”EDL” should be celebrated every year on Sepember 26th.

  3. GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THIS DAY: • Outlining the importance of the foreign languages study, of increasing the number of foreign languages studied, for the purpose of strenghtening multilingvism and intercultural connections. • Promoting the linguistic and cultural richness (which must be preserved) of Europe. • Encouraging lifelong learning, wether it be in schools or not, for personal study, for professional development, for relocation purposes or for the simple pleasure of learning a new language.

  4. EUROPE AND MULTILINGVISM • Europe posesses a true linguistic richness: 23 official languages, adn over 60 comunities speaking their regional or minority language, not to mention the citizens whose origins are extra european and speak their native language • Europe is a continent with a large language diversity, the European Union having at present 23 official laguages and the number is increasing as the EU continues its expansion. • More than this, the E U has over 60 indigenous comunities who speak regional or minoritary languages: from the old celtic languages in the Western Europe (gaelic) to those in the Eastern parts (the Kasubian language from Poland • The main european languages belong to the indo-european family.

  5. MULTILINGUAL CITIES • European languages continue to evolve as many foreign languages are being brought onto the continent by imigrants. In multicultural cities as London, Paris, Brussels or Berlin, hundreds of languages are spoken. • The European Union admits both the tight connection between language and identity, and that the language is the most direct expession of a culture Therefore linguistic diversity is respected and multilingvism is promoted when necessary , as to protect endangered languages.

  6. FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY • The foreign languages study is recommended to all people, no matter the age or reason for studying. Moreover, knowing other languages is a plus when we need to overcome personal and national barriers, allowing europeans to work together, comute and relocate. • Learning a foreign language can be a nice and full of satisfaction experience. It is important to find the most siutable learning method adjusted to our needs.

  7. LEARNING METHODS • Individual Learning – without a teacher, using TV programmes and shows, DVDs, CDs, Internet etc • Watching TV – watching or listeningt to he classes provided by certain TV or radio shows broadcasted. • Searching the internet–using the interractive classes provided by certain sites • Learning with the aid of a teacher –the advantage is that there is a support groupin the classmates and the teacher guides the stundents according to each of their specific needs • Classes at work – employers offer classes as they admit that speaking a foreign language is vital for their success • Finding a study partner-This way of learning is based on the fact that there are two people speaking the same mother tongue, who want to learn foreign languages by using different meaans of communication (letters, e-mails, telephonic conversations etc).
