  4. Caste in Hinduism • Hindu varnas: --brahmin (priests) --kshatriya (warriors) --vaishya (merchants) --shudra (laborers) • Untouchables/dalits: without caste • Jati: division within varna • Hindu caste system traditionally fluid

  5. Census of India • Began 1871 • Made caste official by forcing people to identify by caste • Required people to identify their religion • Significance: Hardened flexible categories
