  1. We are too fat! Leigh Feenburg

  2. Introduction • Our country is the fattest country in the world, and we are currently the most fat we’ve ever been (“Fat”, Public Broadcasting System Home Video, 2000)

  3. Need for awareness of the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle • STAT: Since 1991, obesity has increased by nearly 60% nationally (cnn.com 6/12/03) • Effect 1: 34% of adults are overweight and an additional 27% are obese (customwire.ap.org 6/12/03) • Effect 2: Physical inactivity and being overweight account for more than 300,000 pre-mature deaths in the U.S. annually (Galli, Foundations and Principles of Health Education, John Wiley and Sons Inc. 1999) • Effect 3: Children born in the U.S. have a 50% chance of becoming overweight (Childhood and Adolescent Obesity in America, Betty Holms) • Effect 4: Whether it’s all the fast food or lack of exercise people are heavier than ever, giving way to such diseases as diabetes or heart disease (pinksunrise.com 6/12/03) • Effect 5:Excessively fat people are walking time bombs who often end up with life-threatening maladies (Obesity is America’s greatest threat surgeon general says, Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, Pamela Johnson)

  4. Possible Solutions • Brilliant Idea 1: Transition away from fast food, and back to requiring sit-down family meals • Reward: Better diet • Punishment: Kid loses some allowance

  5. Possible Solutions • Brilliant Idea 2: Incentive proram for exercising ex: for every hour of exercise you do, grant yourself an hour of couch time. Relaxation is a lot more enjoyable when you’ve earned it! • Reward: Couch Time! And of course your health! • Punishment: Loss of couch time!

  6. Benefits • Reverse Effect 1: We will not be a part of the 34% people overweight or 27% obese • Reverse Effect 2: You won’t be one of the 300,000 deaths a year from a sedentary lifestyle • Reverse Effect 3: Our children will not have a 50% chance of being overweight at birth • Reverse Effect 4: We will not increase our risks for diabetes, and heart disease

  7. Take A Stand! • The next time you are craving McDonalds, at least think about what I’ve told you today, and maybe even make yourself a fresh healthy meal!
