  1. Mapperley Plains Primary SchoolKS2 SATS Meeting Wednesday 16th January 2019

The Tests • The KS2 SATS tests are national tests which assess your child’s ability in English and Maths • Children will either achieve WTS (Working Towards), EXS (Expected), or GDS (At Greater Depth) • This year, the tests will take place during the week beginning Monday 13th May • It is very important that your child is at school in every day during this week

  4. Higher attaining children • No separate test • Each test has scope for higher-attaining children to show their strengths • Questions towards the end of the tests may be more difficult for many children

  5. When are the tests?

  6. Reading • Consists of a single test paper with 3unrelated texts • Children have 60mins in total • A total of 50 marks are available • Questions will test comprehension skills, inference and deduction skills and children’s understanding of authorial choices

  7. The genre of the texts vary from year to year. They could include: • A biography • A short story • A diary extract • A magazine article • A poem • A newspaper report • An interview • A poster • A story • Web pages

  8. The Question Booklet • Your child will be asked different kinds of questions about each of the texts • Questions might require: • A multiple choice • Short answers • A few words or a sentence • Longer answers where children need to give reasons for their answers, explanations or opinions

  9. Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPAG) • Spelling test contains 20 words and lasts approx. 15mins.] • Separate test for grammar, punctuation and vocabulary • Test lasts for 45mins and requires short answers including some multiple choice • (See example questions)

  10. The Spelling Test • Your child will be tested on 20 spellings • These are not just random spellings but include certain patterns • The test is a cloze procedure where your child has to fill in the missing word as it is read

  12. Writing assessments • Children’s writing is assessed internally using teacher assessment based on writing throughout the course of the year • Greater emphasis on composition this year

  13. The Maths Tests • There are 3 maths papers in total: • Paper 1 – Arithmetic (30mins) • Paper 2 – Reasoning (40mins) • Paper 3 – Reasoning (40mins)

  14. Paper 1 - Arithmetic • Lasts for 30mins and includes calculation methods for all operations, fractions, %s and decimals • Questions gradually increase in difficulty

  15. Papers 2 & 3 - Reasoning • Both papers last for 40 minutes • They will test your child’s knowledge & understanding of mathematics • Children will answer questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution

  16. They will also test problem-solving skills including problems with more than one step • Some questions will require your child to explain their thinking & give reasons for their answers • The papers will also test your child’s ability to apply their knowledge within different contexts

  17. Breakfast Club • Breakfast will be provided during SATs week – bacon / sausage cobs

  18. How can you help?IL • Support and reassure your child there is nothing to worry about and that they should always try their best. Praise and encourage! • Ensure your child has best possible attendance • Continue to help your child complete the homework sent home • Reading, spelling and arithmetic (times tables) are always good to practise • Talk to your child about what they have been learning about at school and what books they are reading

  19. Visit BBC Bitesize Revisewise & SATS Magic websites • Encourage children to go onto Times Tables Rock Stars • Purchase CGP resources suggested by school and any other materials

Where and how will the tests take place? • Tests will be administered in classrooms • Some children will be in smaller groups • A number of adults in school will be supporting with tests: Mr Cassidy, Mrs Napier, class teachers and TAs • Children will be encouraged to do their best and supported throughout the entire process so that they don’t feel overwhelmed (hopefully!)

  22. Extra time • Some children will qualify for extra time depending on their individual needs • Some children may supported in others way eg. scribe • We will notify you and the children before the tests if this is the case

  23. Don’t Panic! • The most important things for you to take away from tonight are: • The knowledge of what is expected of your child by the end of year 6 • Some practical ways you can help your child at home, especially reading!

  24. We want your children to do the best they can and reach their full potential • Encourage your child to do some work at home – it could be for 10 minutes each night or maybe for slightly longer two or three times a week • We also want them to have an enjoyable and interesting time during their last year at primary school so will be focusing on other subjects in the afternoons • Don’t forget you can always make an appointment to see your child’s teacher during the year at any time
