  2. What is “Accessing Campus Computer Resources From Home and Away”? Using a computer at an off-campus location toaccess campus computer resources andInformation Technology services. This is sometimes also referred to as “remote computer access”.

  3. What is an Off-Campus Location? Anywhere off the Truman campus where you are not directly connected to the Truman computer network

  4. What Can I Access Remotely? • Pickler Library Databases http://library.truman.edu/databases/general.htm • Network Drives (W:, Y: etc) • Network Printers • Email with Outlook (or your favorite email client, Thunderbird, Eudora, Mac Mail etc). No more OWA. • Your Work Computer System Note: The speed of your Internet connection may limit the resources you can access

What Do I Need? • You must be a current Truman faculty, staff or student. • Your off-campus computer must have Internet access. • If your Internet connection is dial-up, due to its slow speed you can use the library databases by using the TrumanProxy Server, but you will NOT be able to use many other campus computing resources remotely. • If your Internet connection is broadband (a high speed Internet connection) you can use the library databases and other campus computing resources remotely by using the Truman VPN Service.

  6. What is a Proxy Server? A proxy server is a a computer system or an application program which services the requests of clients by forwarding requests to other servers. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server)‏

Proxy Server Requirements • To use the Truman proxy server you need to change your Internet browser settings and enter your Truman network userid and password. • The Truman proxy server may be used by almost any computer operating system; Windows, Mac, Linux etc and by almost any Internet browser; Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc. • Complete step-by-step instructions on using the proxy server are available on the ITS web site at http://its.truman.edu/documentation/index.asp?docId=7

How to Access Library Databases With the Proxy Server • Configure your browser to use the Truman proxy server as per ITS web site instructions. http://its.truman.edu/documentation/index.asp?docId=7 • Start your Internet browser normally, and when the browser prompts you for your Truman network userid and password enter them. • You can now use the Library Databases.http://library.truman.edu/databases/general.htm

  9. What is a VPN Service? A virtual private network (VPN) is a communications network tunneled through another network, and dedicated for a specific network. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN)‏

  10. VPN Requirements • To use the VPN service you first need to install additional software on your computer system. The VPN software is available for Windows computer systems, and Mac and Linux systems. • With the VPN software you can make a secure, encrypted connection from your off-campus computer to the Truman computer network. • Complete step-by-step instructions for the VPN service are available on the ITS web site at https://secure.truman.edu/its-s/vpn/login2.asp?page=/its-s/vpn/index.asp

How to Access Library Databases With the VPN Service • Install the VPN software on your computer system as per the ITS web site instructions. https://secure.truman.edu/its-s/vpn/login2.asp?page=/its-s/vpn/index.asp • Connect to the Truman network with the VPN. • Start your Internet browser normally and you may now access the restricted Library Databases. http://library.truman.edu/databases/general.htm • Disconnect the VPN when you are done.

How to Access Network Drives With the VPN Service • Install the VPN software on your computer system as per the ITS web site instructions. https://secure.truman.edu/its-s/vpn/login2.asp?page=/its-s/vpn/index.asp • Connect to the Truman network with the VPN. • Follow the step-by-step instructions for network drives on the ITS web site. http://its.truman.edu/documentation/index.asp?docId=8 • Disconnect the network drive when done. • Disconnect the VPN when you are done.

How to Access Network Printers With the VPN Service • Install the VPN software on your computer system as per the ITS web site instructions. https://secure.truman.edu/its-s/vpn/login2.asp?page=/its-s/vpn/index.asp • Connect to the Truman network with the VPN. • Follow the step-by-step instructions for network printers on the ITS web site. http://its.truman.edu/documentation/index.asp?docId=87 • Disconnect the network printer when done. • Disconnect the VPN when you are done.

How to Access Email Using Your Favorite Email Client With the VPN • Install the VPN software on your computer system as per the ITS web site instructions. https://secure.truman.edu/its-s/vpn/login2.asp?page=/its-s/vpn/index.asp • Connect to the Truman network with the VPN. • Start your favorite email client on your computer and access your Truman mail. • Close your email client. • Disconnect the VPN when you are done.
