  6. How do I fill outSection 1? • In section 1, check one of each core class: Language Arts, World Cultures, Math, and Science. • Decide with your parents if you want to take grade level core class or PreAP

  7. Pre-AP(Advanced Placement)The decision to take a Pre-AP course needs to be what is most appropriate for your child. Students and their parents/guardians should discuss content interests and course expectations.

  8. Why Pre-AP? • If you have a high interest or strong skill set in a certain subject area, Pre-AP for that course content area may be a good choice! • Pre-AP courses in middle school prepare students for AP (Advanced Placement) classes in high school in all content areas. • Students who pass the AP content-specific exams are given college credit in High School.

  9. 6thGradeLanguage ArtslExpectations of Pre-AP students in ELAPre-AP students have a summer reading assignment for ELA that will be due within the first few weeks of school. Pre-AP students read higher-level texts in ELA independently and analyze them using Advanced Placement strategies.

  10. Things to Consider about Pre-AP ELA • You should have passing STAAR scores in reading and writing (4th grade). • Your score should show mastery of the majority of the state standards. • You think reading and/or writing is fun!

  11. Things to Consider about Pre-AP ELA • Willingness to work hard on all components of an ELA class—this includes writing, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. • Commitment to reading—Pre-AP ELA students are expected to read outside of class in order to meet the 40 Book Challenge in one school year. • Commitment to writing— Pre-AP students have writing expectations that match the AP exam expectations.

  12. 6th Grade Social Studies(World Cultures)Students in Pre-AP World Cultures will be expected to: • Write essays and short answer responses utilizing critical thinking, research, and creativity • Complete at-home reading assignments that include the textbook as well as other teacher supplied articles

  13. What to expect in Pre-AP World Cultures • In PreAP and AP classes, a comprehension level of the content will usually be acquired outside of the classroom as the student reads from the textbook or other sources • In grade-level (on-level)classes, a comprehension level of the content will usually be acquired inside the classroom through reading, viewing, and listening.

  14. 6th Grade MathDifference from Grade Level Math • There is an expectation for deeper understanding and application of concepts. • Students taking Pre-AP Math in 7th grade take the 8th grade STAAR Test.

  15. Difference from Grade Level Math The pace is much faster since teachers are covering 6th grade and most of 7th grade TEKS.

  16. Things to Consider about Pre-AP Math • Math STAAR scores – your math score from 4th grade was at or close to Level 3 • 5th Grade Math Success – designed for students that quickly grasp new concepts and demonstrate the ability to apply these concepts • Willingness to work hard – effort can be just as important as test scores

  17. 6thGrade Science Pre-AP Science versus Science • Pre-AP students will study concepts and objectives with more depth and complexitythan in 6th grade science. • Pre-AP students must be able to work independently in and outside of the classroom on self-directed areas of study. • Enrichment project

  18. Things to consider about Pre AP Science • Grades: Often times when students feel challenged and are spending more time with their work their grades are not as high as they are used to. How do you feel about this? • Time: There may be times when you need to attend tutoring, ask for help, spend extra time studying, and you never had to before. How do you feel about this?
