Careers Service : What can we offer you? • Provide individual guidance about career options • Help you to identify next steps for job hunting in the UK & abroad • Check CVs, applications and covering letters with feedback • Employer events throughout the year e. g.   4. Job Market & Recruitment in the UK • Competitive? • Recruitment – Where are the jobs advertised? • Selection – not simply about sending out a CV • When should you apply? • How many applications is best? • How can you improve your chances? • Importance of developing your language fluency

Time frame for Graduate Job Search in the UK? • Annual recruitment cycle • Graduate Programme - Early applications – don’t wait as it’s a rolling programme, often close before CD • Internships similar – also some off cycle internships – recruitment ad hoc • Other companies – recruit all year round • Careers Events: Fairs, Careers Forums, employers presentations Careers Service - “JobsLive”; Careers publications, via Dept. • Specialist Graduate Publications, Employer Directories - Free • Further Study – PhD applications – start early in the autumn term & check out funding regulations. • Check the visa regulations if applicable – MSc courses • Hidden Job Market – very large!

Immigration Rules on Working DURING studies • Non-EEA students can work: • UG students: up to 20 hours per week in term time, unlimited hours in holiday time • MSc students: up to 20 hours per week until course end date • PhD students: up to 20 hours per week until viva & final corrections done

EEA Nationals • Special Rules for Bulgarians, Romanians and Croatians: • apply for a Registration Certificate confirming that you are a student (application form BR1 / CR1) • Apply as soon as possible if you intend to take a job (can take 3-4 months) • permission to work up to 20 hours per week in term-time

Points Based System • Tier 1: Graduate Entrepreneur, Entrepreneur, Investor, Exceptional Talent, Highly Skilled / Post Study Work • Tier 2: skilled workers with a job offer, to fill gaps in the UK labour force • Tier 3: low skilled workers to fill specific temporary labour shortages: (dormant) • Tier 4: students, doctorate extension • Tier 5: youth mobility, temporary workers, sponsored researchers

Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur • 20 visas available at Imperial (10 ring-fenced for MBA) • Call for applications: July and November • Application form: www.imperial.ac.uk/international/current/visas/working/workingafteryourstudies • Panel of entrepreneurial experts • Letter of endorsement from Imperial and bank statement showing £900 / £1800 for previous 3 months when applying • 1 year visa initially, possible to extend for a second year • Monitoring on a quarterly basis: report and visit • No restriction on working hours

Tier 2 General • UG and PGT students on student/Tier 4 visa who have been awarded their degree (or PhD students who have completed at least 12 months) are eligible to switch into Tier 2 if they have a job offer • Employer must be on list of registered sponsors • No Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) required if switching within UK • Not part of the 20,700 cap if switching within UK

Tier 4 Doctorate Extension • Open to any PhD student completing their degree after April 6th 2013 • To work or look for work for up to 12 months after end of PhD • CAS issued by Student Records: Imperial will monitor you (‘light touch’) • Can subsequently switch within UK into Tier 1 or • Tier 2 (General)

  25. General Tips on Points Based System • Things are changing – check you have latest advice, application form and follow Home Office guidance • Maintenance requirement: £900 for 3 months! • Don’t breach your student visa conditions!
