  1. Anglicky v odborných předmětech"Support ofteachingtechnicalsubjects in English“ Tutorial: Engineering technology Topic: Volumeforming – swageforging Prepared by: Ing. Elena Nová Projekt Anglicky v odborných předmětech, CZ.1.07/1.3.09/04.0002 je spolufinancován Evropským sociálním fondem a státním rozpočtem České republiky.

  2. Volume forming – swage forging

  3. Volume forming – swage forging Swage forging serves for production of large number of identically shaped steel parts or other alloys. Die block is mainly ‘two parts’ tool. Upper and lower (bottom) die. Main advantage of ‘swage forging’ is high productivity and easy operation. Disadvantages are limited dimension and mass.

  4. Volume forming – swage forging • Heated material is inserted into opening in bottom die, shaped to final forged piece subsequently the upper die is pressed against the bottom die. • All dimensions are extended by shrinkage value of the forged part.

  5. Volume forming – swage forging • For die forging a power hammer and presses are used. • Die opening is filled up either by ramming or hobbing. – hobbing is easier.

  6. Volume forming – swage forging • Die forging consist of: • Heating up to forging temperature • Rough forge / adapt the shape to die cavity • Forging to die block • Burr cutting off Pressing die blockForging die block

  7. Volume forming – swage forging • In case of more complicated shapes is necessary to forge into more die cavities, which ensure better material flow – multiple-impression. • 1-3 – blocking / preliminary forging • 4-5- burr cutting

  8. Volume forming – swage forging • Example of die blocks: • Knife forgings:

  9. Volume forming – swage forging • Multiple impression die for power hammer • (1 – lengthening, 2 – division, 3 – blocking, 4 – forging, 5 – finishing mould cavity and – semi-product)

  10. Volume forming – swage forging • Final treatment of forged piece: • Cutting off burr • Punching • Calibration

  11. Volume forming – swage forging • Before forging die block must be preheated to 250 deg. C. • Working surfaces are lubricated with oil and graphite mixture. • Finished product is soft annealed. • Examples of die forgings:

  12. Answer these questions: • What is a drop forging - swaging. • How is the die divided. • Main advantages of swaging. • By what parameters are increased the final product size? • What mechanical machines are used for die forging / swaging?

  13. Answer these questions: • How do we call forging by impact? • How is forging by steady pressure called? • Name for stages of swaging. • When do we forge in progressive dies? • Describe final treatment of forged pieces.
