  1. Could COVID-19 Be Responsible for Your Psychiatric Disorder?

  2. If you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19, it’s not unlikely that you might feel tired, stressed or even sad as a result, and many people who experience physical symptoms of the virus, screen positive for depression and anxiety. However, it’s important to note that symptoms of COVID-19 are often found to overlap with symptoms of depression, such as disordered sleep patterns, impaired concentration and a reduced appetite. So, what steps can you take to determine whether the way you’re feeling and/or behaving, is a result of COVID-19?

  3. Getting an accurate diagnosis In many cases, a medical professional may suggest that you wait for a certain period of time so that your symptoms can be monitored in greater detail, and while they may prescribe you antidepressants or talking therapies during that period, bear in mind that if your symptoms are mild to moderate, they may often dissipate as you recover from the virus and your quality of life improves.

  4. What should you do if you’re experiencing depression or anxiety for the first time? Regardless of whether you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19, it may be that no special treatment is needed if your symptoms of depression or anxiety are mild; your doctor will assess your condition based upon your medical history and current circumstances. However, if you’re struggling to cope and medication is prescribed, you’ll be requested to review your treatment plan regularly, and should your condition or circumstances improve significantly, it may be reduced or stopped accordingly.

  5. If you’ve been recommended to seek help from a psychotherapist or counsellor, then attending your sessions will likely help you whether your depression and anxiety is temporary, or long term. How can you minimize the impact upon your mental health if diagnosed with COVID-19? There are several steps you can take to minimize the impact COVID-19 has upon your mental health, some of which can be found below:

  6. Get vaccinated! Important for everyone, but especially so for those with existing psychiatric disorders. • Wear a mask and maintain a safe distance – while it’s important that as pandemic restrictions ease and more people are fully vaccinated, you continue to wear a mask and socially distance where possible, you should also try to keep your social connections. • Get physical! Moving and keeping our bodies active is fantastic for all manner of physical and mental health conditions. • Relax… having rituals in your life that help to relax you can be incredibly important.

  7. Limit your use of alcohol and drugs – while the pandemic has caused many of us to turn to drink and drugs to decrease our stress levels or temporarily improve our mood, increased use can lead to substance abuse. • Seek professional help – talking to friends and family about the way you’re feeling can be hugely helpful in many cases, but sometimes, only a mental health professional can give you the advice, support and guidance that you need.

  8. Whatever your mental health symptoms may be, it’s important that you take them seriously and seek a diagnosis as soon as possible. With medication and/or therapy from a qualified psychotherapist or counsellor, you can alleviate your symptoms – whether they’re related to COVID-19 or otherwise - and lead a full, happy life.
