  1. The Scripture Cannot Be Broken John 10:35

  2. Background • Jesus was making a claim to his own deity and the Jews rejected it (Jn. 10:30-33) • Jesus made an argument from the OT (Jn. 10:34-36) • Psalm 82:6 calls human judges “gods” and “sons of the Most High,” so even if Jesus was just a man why cannot he claim to be the “son of God”? • “Gods” (Heb. elohim) means “mighty ones” and is sometimes applied to prophets or judges (Ex. 4:16; 7:1; 21:6; 22:28; Psa. 82:1,6)

  3. Background • The scripture “cannot be broken;” that is, cannot be dismissed or set aside (Mt. 5:18-19; Jn. 5:18; 7:23) • God’s word is on record in the law and the authority of scripture is final; every statement of scripture stands immutable, indestructible in its truth; unchanged by the denials, ignorance, criticisms or charges of man • Jesus’ attitude toward scripture (note just one word in OT scripture, “gods”) needs to be our attitude today (Lk. 16:17; 18:31)

  4. Background “Not one jot or tittle”

  5. Many Attempt to Set Aside God’s Word • By substituting their word for God’s word (Mt. 15:3,6) • By ignoring God’s word (Mt. 22:29) • By saying God’s word is out of date (1 Pet. 1:25) • By misinterpreting God’s word (2 Pet. 3:16) • By claiming modern revelation of God’s word (Jude 3) • By adding to / taking from God’s word (Rev. 22:17)

  6. Scripture Cannot Be Broken • Scripture is holy (Rom. 1:2) • Scripture shut up all things under sin (Gal. 3:22) • Scripture is God-breathed (2 Tim. 3:16) • Scripture does not speak in vain (Jas. 4:5) • Scripture is not from man (2 Pet. 1:20) • Let us change our life to fit scripture, not attempt to change scripture to fit our life!
