Impacts of Carbon Cycle Changes on Marine Ecosystems

In this lab, we investigate the effects of changes in the carbon cycle on marine ecosystems by observing the reaction of shells to different liquid environments. This experiment involves setting up beakers with shells and liquids, measuring the mass of the shells, and recording observations and data. After 48 hours, the shells are removed, dried, and their mass is measured again. All data and observations are documented for further analysis.

  1. Lab #2 How does a change in the carbon cycle affect marine ecosystems?

  2. PPE

  3. Set up beakers with shells

  4. Add correct liquid to beaker and obtain mass of shell, record data

  5. Use pH strips or pH meter for each liquid, record data

  6. Place shell in correct beaker and record observations, liquid should cover the shell completely

  7. Cover beakers and leave on the side for 2 days

  8. After 48 hours... • Record observations • Take out shell with tweezers and lay on a paper towel to dry (be sure shell is DRY before obtaining the mass)

  9. Measure mass of each dried shell

  10. Possible Data Table Outcome

  11. Clean up!
