  2. When it comes to bullying, a lot of people say, “What is the big deal? This is an age-old problem...it’s part of growing up.”

  3. Olweus Bully Prevention Program • FCMS will begin this program this year... • Designed for ALL students • Preventive AND responsive • Focused on changing norms and restructuring the school setting • Research-based program • NOT time-limited: Requires systematic efforts over time

  4. Olweus is not... • a curriculum • a conflict resolution approach • a peer mediation program • an anger management program

  5. What can we do through Olweus to solve bullying? • Educate students • Identify bullying - what is it, and what does it look like? • Teach students the effects of bullying? • Change the culture of the school • Set up consequences and counseling

  6. What is Bullying? According to Olweus, “Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to a person who has a hard time defending him/herself.

  7. 3 components of bullying • Involves an aggressive behavior • Typically involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time • Imbalance of power or strength

  8. Bully-type behaviors can be direct or indirect.

  9. Direct Bully-type behaviors • teasing threatening hitting stealing *These behaviors are initiated by one or more students against a victim.

  10. Indirect Bully-type behaviors • exclusion • spreading rumors • enforcing social isolation • A key component of bullying is the psychological intimidation that occurs repeatedly over time (ERIC Digest).

  11. Technology and Cyberbullying through... • Cellphones/Smartphones *The average adolescent/teenager sends & receives 3700 text messages a month. *Instant “silent” access to bullying at school *Distraction at school

  12. Cyberbullying and facebook • Instant and repetitive bullying tactics through social media • Inappropriate messages and pictures can be sent via social media to huge groups of people in schools, churches, communities...anywhere and anytime!

  13. It is important to have consistent rules in place for students to have clear expectations of what to do and what not to do concerning bullying.

  14. The Olweus rules are posted in different areas in the school AND will be enforced in all areas of the school.

  15. School Rules from Olweus: • We will not bully others. • We will try to help students who are bullied. • We will try to include students who are left out. • If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and at home.

  16. How will Olweus be implemented at FCMS? • Classrooms will hold weekly meetings to discuss bullying scenarios and appropriate behavior. • Teachers, staff, administrators will enforce rules. (They have already been trained in Olweus.) • When bullying is observed, the situation will be used as a teaching moment.

  17. Students who are victims will be reaffirmed and checked on; students with bully-type behavior will be “counseled” at the point of intervention and receive immediate consequences.

  18. Parents of students who are victims will be called and apprised of the situation so immediate care, support, and instruction can be given. • “Counsel” will also be given to “empower” the victim.

  19. Parents of the student exhibiting the “bully-type” behavior will be called and apprised of the situation. • Consequences, care, and support of this student will be discussed with the parent.

  20. On-the-Spot Interventions per Olweus • Stop the bullying • Support the student who has been bullied • Name bullying behavior & refer to school rules • Engage the bystanders • Impose immediate & appropriate consequences • Take steps to ensure the bullied student will be protected from future bullying.

  21. What can you do as parents, grandparents, guardians? • Ask questions • Notice odd behavior - child/adolescent not wanting to go to school...sadness, anger, sickness... • Check text messages/facebook... • Pay attention...& ask questions AGAIN... • Contact the school...

  22. Remember... • Preventing bullying is changing the culture of a school...it’s like turning the Titanic around; it will take time.
