  1. Bellwork (4/30) • Write a paragraph explaining the reason behind celebrating Memorial Day. Then discuss what you think most Americans actually do on Memorial Day. Does the purpose of the holiday fit American action?

  2. Pre-Reading • Vocabulary and Language Study Prior to Reading “Grape Sherbet” by Rita Dove (p. 681). • With a partner, discuss the meaning of the following words/concepts: Memorial Day, sherbet, masterpiece, galloped, diabetic, lavender

  3. Small Groups • In a group of three, use your TOASTTT notes to explicate the poem “Grape Sherbet” on p. 681. Follow the process step-by-step; each group member MUST create his own TOASTTT chart. • O: at least one sentence for each stanza • A (Analysis)- 2nd T (Tone): 2-3 specific examples from the poem

  4. Journal • Write a one page journal response that describes the importance of childhood memories in “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Grape Sherbet.” How do your memories of childhood help for your to connect to these poems? How are the messages about memory similar and different in these poems? Use at least one specific example from each poem.

  5. Homework • TOASTTT “I Ask My Mother to Sing” on page. 680. • Please bring a copy of your favorite song lyrics to TOASTTT for Wednesday
