  1. International Diplomacy International College KhonKaen University 2011 Week 10 – The Diplomatic Speech

  2. The Diplomatic Speech • An effective speech relies on three successful processes: • Sound research of the topic • Good organization and design in writing the speech • Effective presentation (delivery) • It is also important to tailor your speech to your purpose, and to your audience – what does the audience know already, what do you want the audience to do after hearing your speech?

  3. The Diplomatic Speech • Like a good essay, a speech has three parts: • An introduction • A main body • A conclusion • But a speech is more interactive than an essay – you need to think all the time about how you want the audience to react

  4. Diplomatic Speech - Introduction • The introduction needs to do four things, all quite quickly: • Gain attention of your audience • Make a clear purpose statement • Establish topic significance for the audience • Preview the main points

  5. Diplomatic Speech – Main Body • The main body is where you develop your arguments, by: • Presenting your research, point-by-point • Appealing to the audience to support your point of view • Demonstrating why your position is more accurate or important than anything else the audience may have heard

  6. Diplomatic Speech - Conclusion • The conclusion needs to do three things: • Summarize the main points • Refer back to the introduction (your purpose statement) • Make a memorable finish

  7. Diplomatic Speech - Presentation • How a speech is delivered can be as important as the substance of the speech • Three important aspects of speech presentation: • Using supporting materials (examples, statistics, experts’ views) effectively • An appropriate and effective style (clarity, precision, interest) • Competent delivery

  8. Diplomatic Speech - Purpose • There are just two main types of speech that diplomats generally need to make: • An informative speech • A persuasive speech

  9. Diplomatic Speech – Check List (1) • Introduction • An effective strategy to get audience’s attention • Clear, concise statement of your main proposition(s) • Convince audience that your purpose and position is important to them • List very briefly the main arguments you will be presenting

  10. Diplomatic Speech – Check List (2) • Main Body • Use a clear organizational pattern suitable for information (topic-by-topic, chronological or spatial) or for persuasion (causal, problem-solution, problem-cause-solution, two-sided) • Use effective examples, statistics or citations from reports or experts to support arguments • Use appropriate persuasion strategies (personal identification, credibility, solid arguments, contrast effect, emotional appeals, two-sided approach)

  11. Diplomatic Speech – Check List (3) • Conclusion • Include a concise summary of main arguments • Include a brief reference in support of the purpose statement in introduction • Develop a strong, attention-getting finish for the speech
