  2. Introduction • Soon, you’ll be on your own. • Having a good quality of life takes planning and hard work. • Having career goals will help you make decisions that will get you somewhere.

  3. Remember… • Only the best employees get opportunities for advancement. • Every day, you must show that you deserve your job, that you take it seriously, and that you want to be considered for promotion. • Many companies look for talent within their own organizations.

  4. Don’t Be a Spectator – It’s your Life • You must be involved in your own life. • No one else will do the things necessary for your life to go the way you want it to. • When things work out, you can take the credit. If things don’t work out, you have only yourself to blame.

  5. Vocabulary • Competition – 200 applicants, 1 job • Wage/salary • Benefits – health coverage, vacation, etc. • Retirement/401K • Taxes

  6. Full-time vs. Part-time Employment • Part-time: less than 35 hours/week • Full-time more than 35 hours/week • Break time: why it takes nine clock hours to work eight hours.

  7. Jobs and Careers – What are the Differences? • Jobs get you by. • Careers offer a chance to be more challenged, get promoted, and affect how things are done. • Which do you want?

  8. What are Employers Looking For? • Reliability • Durability • Flexibility • Sociability – within reason • Willingness to help others • Respect to staff and customers • Good communication skills – verbal, computer, phone.

  9. Should you Ever Turn Down a Job? • Pros, cons • Work Environment/Turnover • Proper Respect/Safety • Place in market – will you have a job in a month?
