  10. Focus Today- Two Programs • Short Documentaries • Media Projects

  11. Short Documentaries • Single films up to 30 minutes • Series of short films • Related Website • Outreach and Distribution • $60,000 single film • $250,000 series (each up to 30 minutes) • Production only

  12. Media Projects • Films/TV (longer than 30 minutes) • Radio • Podcasts • Related Websites • Outreach and Distribution

  13. Media Projects • Development script or detailed treatment. • Production produce and distribute your film or audio project • Offered semi-annually • Next deadline: January 2020

  14. Media Projects-Development • Funding: Up to $75,000 • Series or single films • Prerequisites: • Media and scholarly teams • Humanities themes • Draft treatment (5 pages)

  15. Media Projects-Development Activities may include: • Meetings with scholars • Research and preliminary interviews preparation of program treatments and/or scripts • Production of a work-in-progress or trailer; • Creation of partnerships for outreach activities and public engagement

  16. Media Projects-Production • Funding: Up to $650,000 • Prerequisites: • Significant research on subject • Media and scholarly teams • Humanities themes • Detailed treatment or script (15 pages per hour) • Plans for fundraising and distribution • Work sample

  17. Media Projects- Production Activities may include: • Scholarly consultation/review of script or cuts • Final research and writing • Shooting/recording/editing/post • Engagement • Related website • Evaluation

What’s New • Short Documentaries- new • Production scripts now shorter: 15 pages per hour • Last year we shortened Development length to 5 pages • Order of information requested • Reports must be up to date • New samples may be posted • For January, may make additional changes- guidelines posted in November

  23. The Review Process • Peer review by 5 panelists • Recommendations from the panel • Recommendations from the National Council for the Humanities • Chairman makes the final decision

  24. What Does a Successful Proposal Look Like? • Significant, appealing subject • Strong scholarship & humanities team • Accomplished media team • Engaging storytelling • National or strong regional distribution plan • Wide audience appeal

Final Tips for a Successful Proposal • Independents must partner with eligible organization • Register with SAM and grants.gov NOW • Write for both media professionals and scholars • Form additional partnerships for outreach and distribution • Ask colleagues to read a draft of the application
