  3. Landfill Facts • Open 6 days/week and most holidays • Operate 2 active landfills everyday Lined MSW landfill and a separate C&D landfill • Process 1,000,000 pounds of waste each day • 92,000 pounds of recycling everyday • 1.4 MegaWatts of Renewable Electricity produced, powering 1100 homes

  4. Buncombe Bioreactor Background & Goals • Buncombe Bioreactor • Began in 2004 • EPA’s Project XL (eXellence in Leadership). One of a few in the country that are full scale projects encompassing the entire MSW footprint: • 54 acres ~11 football fields • Highlight 2 Goals: • Leachate Recirculation over alternative liners • Settlement Cells 1-5 (31 Acres filled) Cell 6 (23 Acres) Active Filling Area

  5. Leachate Recirculation & Landfill Gas Production

  6. How does methane produce electricity? Add a footer

  7. Total Carbon Equivalencies2014-2016 78,067 Metric Tons (CO2e) 11,067 (Generator Offsets) 67,000 (Cumulative Carbon Credits) = + OR OR 8,244 homes’ energy use for one year 8.8 million gallons of gasoline not consumed 16,490 passenger vehicles taken off road for one year Add a footer

  8. Landfill Settlement = Airspace Gained

  9. Settlement Types Cumulative Settlement • From Annual Topo Surveys • Realized from Leachate Recirculation & accelerated waste decomposition • 64,000 cubic yards of settlement valued at $2.4 million in airspace (That’s just in cells 1-5)

  10. Airspace Gains Compaction/Daily Cover • Alternative Daily Covers • Posi-shell used exclusively for daily cover • Increased compaction • New CAT 836k compactor • Currently operating 1680-1800 lbs/cy compaction • 2017 Remaining Capacity report:

  11. Airspace Gained Settlement + Steepening slopes • 4:1 sideslopes to 3:1 (Going back over old cells 1-6, 54 acres) • Began Sept. 2017

  12. First load of trash going into new sideslope disposal area The excavator and dump truck clear out the future disposal area on the sideslopes. Add a footer
