  1. MEMBERSHIP Promotion

PURPOSE • Publicizes the aims, activities, achievements, and scientific and educational purposes of the Society to encourage qualified persons to apply for membership • Monitors Society's membership demographics and adjusts or creates programs to ensure individuals from all demographic backgrounds are being equally attracted to ASHRAE • Provides training and support for chapters and chapter Membership Promotion (MP) chairs • Reports to Members Council on the needs of the entire membership

ROLE OF LOCAL MP CHAIRS • Detailed list of duties by month online • SELL ASHRAE – know ASHRAE – its benefits and advantages • Get new members /retain existing members • Connect and engage members • Diversify the local chapter membership by recruiting under-represented industry areas • Reward and recognize members • Offer mentoring opportunities where necessary

ROLE OF LOCAL MP CHAIRS • Create a succession of membership experts for future chapter leadership • Support Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) • Collaborate with Student Activities regarding retention of students into Associates • Plan membership nights early and get them on the chapter calendar of events • Know and understand PAOE – ask questions early • Know how to run reports and use the data – learn Excel! • Keep regular and open communication lines with your Regional Vice chair (RVC)

MP CHAIR MUSTS • Attend training – whether centralized or at your CRC, be there • Create a committee – this is not a one-person assignment • Set goals with your RVC: Growth and retentionshould be key • Effectively manage delinquent members • Prepare early: • Have your toolkit (membership materials and goals in mind) • Your testimonial (why you joined) • Be sure all applications are fully complete – sending incomplete applications to Headquarters slows down the process for everyone – route applications to Atlanta immediately

  6. MP CHAIR MUSTS - PR Why promote? To best promote the work of ASHRAE and its volunteers around the globe, public relations (PR) is vital. PR helps you grow your chapter through recruitment, retention and awareness! • Help increase public awareness of the benefits to mankind provided by ASHRAE and its members • Help establish ASHRAE as a key resource for technical information relating to environmental control issues

Here are a few tips on how local MPs can help generate better PR: • Appoint a PR committee or chair • Determine objectives for the year – what are you trying to accomplish? • Determine target audiences – who do you want to reach? • Use the media – contact local press to ensure they are aware of chapter events • Promote yourself to allied organizations • Reach out to other building industry chapters in your area and share information about meetings and events

SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL MP COMMITTEE • Distribute workload evenly • Create a competition and challenge them, reward and recognize • Be clear about roles and responsibilities early on – set goals • Be sure they receive the training and materials they need • Offer leadership opportunities – someone might be great with new members, but can grow their skills by working more on delinquency campaigns • Create co-chairs for various projects like YEA activities, mentoring, delinquency campaigns and membership nights
