  2. Review • Opinion essay is an essay which presents the author’s point of view on a particular subject supported by reasons and examples. The purpose is to convince the reader on a controversial issue. • Introduction • Hook  story, anecdote, question, surprising fact • Background information • Thesis statement • Body paragraph • Supporting sentences  facts, reasons, explanations • Counter-argument  refutation • Conclusion • Restate & reinforce

Facts & Opinions • Writers state their opinion and then back it up with facts. • Antibiotics cure infections. • Antibiotics are the most important invention of the twentieth century. • The difference btw Fact & Opinion: • Fact: a truth that is scientifically proven or generally accepted. • Opinion: one point of view among many.

Last words… • The primary objective is to persuade people to change beliefs that many of them do not want to change. • In this kind of essay, we not only give information but also present an argument with the PROS (supporting ideas) and CONS (opposing ideas) of an argumentative issue. We should clearly take our stand and write as if we are trying to persuade an opposing audience to adopt new beliefs or behavior.
