  2. Why a “Storm Portal”? Hurricane Isabel Assessment - “NOAA has really good information, if you can find it” • “one-stop shopping” that informs people – before, during, and after hazardous events • enhances the value of integrated coast, ocean, and atmospheric data . • The site was not intended to create new content • Point customers to sites where detailed information can be accessed.

  4. NOAAWatch “Storm Page” provides links to information on a specific significant environmental hazard.

  5. A variety of environmental hazards

  6. The main page provides an brief synopsis of top environmental hazard news, updated daily (or more frequently as conditions dictate). This main page allows users to quickly scan the top news stories of the day.

  7. Theme Pages provide an overview of NOAA’s role in a specific type of environmental hazard and provide links to other sources of information about the hazard. In addition, other government agency information related to the topic is highlighted.

NOAA Information Web URL’s, Images, RSS feeds, etc RSS Syndication Event Specific Page Archived by Year Theme Page Theme pages provide an overview of NOAA’s role in a particular type of hazard and has links to existing sites to learn more NOAAWatch.gov has info on current hazards and links to educational resources Significant event pages (hurricanes, etc) are linked from NOAAWatch and are archived

Editorial Process for NOAAWatch Editor In Chief primary POC for NOAA management Line Office Editors coordinate with other LO Editors to identify “Top Story” on NOAAWatch Subject Matter Editors - QC of content/feeds from “reporters” and identify links to be added to NOAAWatch pages Content developers are the “reporters” – posting web pages to their existing sites and updating news (RSS) feeds

But what about topics with no available feed? • NOAAWatch team set up a web based tool to generate and administer news feeds • Had to be simple to use • Had to be cross platform compatible • Had to generate RSS feeds that conform to RSS 2.0 standards • Had to provide a review and approval process

  12. The Subject Matter Expert(The Reporter) Subject Matter Experts/Reporters are allowed to edit existing RSS feeds. They may edit news items in the feed, or create new news items for the feeds.

  14. The Editors Editors edit existing news feeds, create new items, and approve items submitted in specific channels. Editors may also assign Reporters permissions to specific feeds.

  15. The Editor’s Screen The main difference in the Editor’s screen and the Reporters screen is the “Active” box (an approval box for the Editor)

The Benefits of Syndication • Information from the authoritative source • Consistent updates of information • Avoids multiple sites having to duplicate efforts to post the same information • There are advantages compared to receiving frequently published content via email • Feed readers are used in personalized home page services like iGoogle or My Yahoo or My MSN to put content such as news, weather and stock quotes appear on the user’s personal page.

  17. Some myths about syndication • If we syndicate our content, no one will visit our site • Allowing other agencies to post content to our Website poses risks • It’s too much trouble to syndicate our content, and besides, no one really uses it
