  1. Using Praat, be able to: • Identify (match) the F0 value for each vowel in your Vowels file to its associated formant spectrogram. • Graph your vowel formant values and write a pattern evaluation. • Write where the tongue is (forward and back; up and down) within the mouth for each vowel’s F0 value. • Match the vowel’s tongue placement to its corresponding mouth diagram. Objectives

  2. TASK 1 Open your vowels.wav file into the Sound Editor window. Choose “Show formants” under the Formant Tab.

  3. TASK 2 Select [i] and write down the F0 value and make sure that your F0 value is within 10 Hz of the value shown on page 175 of the textbook.

  4. TASK 3 1. What does (mean F1 in SELECTION) refer to? (write a short answer explanation on the handout).2. How many separate readings on your sample went into this mean? How did you obtain this number? (write a short answer explanation on the handout).

  5. TASK 4 Write the F0 value for [u] using another method from the pull down selections under the Formant menu. Write down how you obtained this number. Write the F0 values for the remaining four vowels using either method.

  6. TASK 5 Printing Your Spectrogram (not easy!) Follow your Job Aid for Task 5 to print out your spectrogram of your vowels.wav file. Write the phonetic symbol under each vowel’s spectrogram. Write the F0 value for each vowel under its phonetic symbol.

  7. TASK 6 Graphing Your F0 Values Using graph paper, write each phonetic vowel on the x axis and put the frequency in Hz (from 0 to 1000 Hz by 50s) on the y axis. Plot the points for each vowel’s F0 number on the appropriate x and y axes. Describe in a few lines under the graph what pattern you see. Hand your paper in to the instructor at the end of class.

  8. TASK 7 Spectrogram Matching Exercise(handout) Using your knowledge of formants, and without referring to your spectrograms or your graphs, match the F0 value from each spectrogram to its vowel. Write the phonetic symbol within the brackets under each vowel’s spectrogram. Hand your paper in to the instructor at the end of class.

  9. TASK 8 Mouth Diagram Matching Exercise(handout) Using your knowledge of formants, and without referring to your spectrograms or your graphs, match the vowel to its corresponding mouth diagram. Write the phonetic symbol within the brackets under each vowel’s diagram. Hand your paper in to the instructor at the end of class.
