  1. Social media and social innovation some UK experience

  2. What is social media? Various web-based tools and services • blogs • microblogs (e.g. Twitter) • wikis (e.g. Wikipedia) • content sharing (e.g. flickr, Youtube, Vimeo), • social networking (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Ning) • social bookmarking (e.g. Delicious, Diigo, Pocket, Pearltrees) • location based services (e.g Foursquare) • podcasts

  3. What is social innovation? • social processes of innovation, such as open source methods and techniques • innovations which have a social purpose - like microcredit or distance learning.

  4. Social media and social innovation: Organisations • Design Council • RSA (Royal Society of Arts) • NESTA

  5. Design Council - Keeping Connected • Brainy Tech - school pupils teach older adults how to use IT applications (such as the internet, email and Skype) with the aim of connecting them to younger people, their family and friends. • Strollin ‘n’ Rollin - brings together all people, regardless of age and ability. The service provides local social activities, such as community walks, bike rides or group trips to cafés. The service also offers practical door to door transport for purposes such as getting to the shops or the doctor. • 'Conekt 2 u' is a multi-purpose 'radio' that combines traditional style design and new technology to enable older adults to access local services, phone books, diary, bus timetables and other functions, thereby enabling connectivity. • 'Super Maps' deals with the problem of trying to find items in supermarket: a sat nav for your shopping trolley. The twist in the idea is that the sat nav links your shopping preferences to activities in the community. For example, if you bought lots of items for baking, it would print the details of a local baking club on your receipt. http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/our-work/challenges/design-challenges-for-schools/keepingconnecteddesignchallenge-2011/challenge-news/keeping-connected-winner/

  6. RSA Design challenge Part of the curriculum in more than 75 UK design colleges and universities. It challenges student designers to apply their skills and knowledge to tackling social problems. 2011-12: entrants will apply their expertise on issues such as • how to foster intergenerational relationships through design • what the workplace of the future should look like. • developing sustainable consumer healthcare products • designing postage stamps http://www.thersa.org/fellowship/journal/archive/autumn-2011/news/design-challenge http://www.thersa.org/sda

  7. Social media and social innovation: Examples • Social innovation camps • Here’s a Hand • Room for Tea • Trade School • The good gym • Mindapples (not sure about this one)

  8. Social innovation camps What happens when you match up software developers and designers with people who know about a social problem they want to solve? Social Innovation Camps are about finding out. 48 hours to build web-based solutions to a set of social problems – from back-of-the-envelope idea to working prototype.

  9. Social innovation camp 2011 IRISS prize: Share Care Club. Coordinates quick, short-term support for a carer or someone being cared for from their existing social network. Room for Tea. Matches unpaid interns (people getting work experience) with older people who have a spare room. The intern gets somewhere to stay for free; the older person gets help around the house and good company.
