Case Discussion: Mary Northern 1.  Review the details of the Mary Northern case, and recall Buchanan and Brock's discussion of the various capacities involved in competence.  For each of these relevant capacities, discuss the degree to which Northern has this capacity.  (Note the relevant evidence in the description of the case.) 2. Given your conclusions in one, examine the case in light of Buchanan's and Brock's "decision-relative" conception of competence.  How would this conception apply to this particular case? Explain your reasoning.

  2. 3. Consider whether you agree with this result. Do you think Ms. Northern is competent? How would you defend this view? 4.  What is the most important objection that could be raised against your view of this case? How would you respond?
