  16. Why Learn about Literary Devices? It’s good to know about literary devices because they help us indentify what makes a story interesting! They also help us improve writing abilities by letting us know how to get the reader’s attention, and keep them interested in the story!

  17. What is Foreshadowing? Foreshadowing is a literary device in which the author drops hints or gives clues about things that are going to occur later on in the plot of a story.

  18. Where is Foreshadowing Found? Foreshadowing is found almost everywhere! Not only is foreshadowing a large part of books and literature, it can also be used in movies, televisionshows, and famous Broadway plays!

  19. Examples of Foreshadowing Music is one of the best examples of foreshadowing. The use of music in a movie can alert the viewer about things that are going to occur in the movie. Happy and uplifting music can give hints that something good is going to happen to one of the characters. On the over hand, dreary, scary, or sad music may give hints that something bad is going to happen.

  20. On the next slide we are going to watch a short clip about how music is used as foreshadowing! Make sure to click the video to play it!

  21. Video Example of Music Foreshadowing

  22. Music example: The Explanation The music in the background sets a scary tone! The music hints that something bad is going to happen when the shark is present. Without the music, the clip wouldn’t be scary.

  23. Examples of foreshadowing Foreshadow is greatly used in literature! The author can talk about a dream that one of the characters had. The events in the dream could drop hints to something big that will happen later on! An author can also use very vague and unclear phrases like “a mysterious man followed her” and “on a dark and gloomy night”. Phrases like that give clues to the reader that something bad or mysterious is going to happen.

  24. Example of Foreshadowing in Literature One of the best examples of foreshadowing in literature is a scene from Shakespeare’s famous play Hamlet. On the next page, there are a few lines from Hamlet! Read the lines and see if you can Identify the foreshadowing!

  25. Hamlet Example Ghost : I am thy father's spirit, Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night, And for the day confined to fast in fires, Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature Are burnt and purged away. But that I am forbid To tell the secrets of my prison-house, I could a tale unfold whose lightest word Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood, Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres, Thy knotted and combined locks to part And each particular hair to stand on end, Like quills upon the fretful porpentine: But this eternal blazon must not be To ears of flesh and blood. List, list, O, list! If thou didst ever thy dear father love-- HAMLET : O God! Ghost: Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder. HAMLET Murder! Ghost: Murder most foul, as in the best it is; But this most foul, strange and unnatural. HAMLET: Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge.

  26. Hamlet Example: The Explanation When the Ghost speaks of how Hamlet should seek revenge, it gives hints to the reader that Hamlet will seek revenge after the person who killed his father. When Hamlet speaks of “murder” he is foreshadowing about events to come.
