  1. Community Ecology Chapter 8

  2. Ecological Succession • Primary succession - establishment of biotic factors on baron (rock) land • Pioneer species - first plant species in primary succession - attach to rock, Mosses lichens

  3. Ecological Succession: *Successional species *Early successional species - close to ground *Mid successional species - herbs, grasses, low shrubs *Late successional species - trees

  4. Primary Succession Fig. 8-11 p. 157

  5. Ecological Succession: • Secondary succession - establishment of new biotic factors in a previously Vegetated area (has some soil or sediment) Climax Community Late succession community

  6. Secondary Succession Fig. 8-12 p. 158

  7. Ecological Stability and Sustainability • Disturbance - change in environmental conditions that affect a community or ecosystem, fires floods, mining, clearcutting

  8. Ecological Stability and Sustainability • Intermediate disturbance hypothesis - Communities that experience fairly frequent, but moderate disturbances have the greatest species diversity Moderate disturbances allow room for colonizing species to enter ecosystem Example: Lodgepole pine
