Endorsement’s & CTE courses • Handout of CTE courses at Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy • Choosing a pathway for your student should be a fun event, exploring options, interests, abilities, aptitudes. • Some CTE courses are an opportunity for students to earn industry recognized credentials (IRC) while IN high school. • IRC can lead to jobs, careers, financial security, and growth learning experiences for students. Getting a great start on their post-secondary adventures! • All our CTE courses are hands on courses taught by professionals who have worked in that field. • District College Night September 10th @ RHS 6pm-8pm • Burton Open House September 25th at 5pm • Rockwall Job Fair September 14th from 11-4pm at Lake Point Church.

  7. TOP-DownLooking at your college decision in terms of your career path. • 3 Easy Steps to build from the Top-Down. Step 1: What career/job do I want to have? Ex. Social Media Marketing Step 2: What type of degree do I need to do that job/career? Ex. Bachelors Degree: Communications, Business Marketing, Arts Technology & Emerging Communication (ATEC @ UTD), Public Relations, Sociology w/ minor in marketing, etc. Step 3: What colleges offer the degree I need? Ex. Associate of Arts or Associate of Science @ Community Colleges 4 year Universities: DBU, UTD, Texas A&M, TWU, Texas State University, SMU, etc.

  10. UNIVERSITIES HOLISTIC ADMISSIONS REVIEW PROCESS CC & Technical Schools only require a HS diploma/GED. TSI is a benchmark test NOT an entrance requirement.

  11. Application Systems- Have to Check with EVERY University & College! www.applytexas.org ; www.mycoalition.org www.commonapp.org ; University specific applications. Community Colleges & Technical Schools use their own applications. Automatic Admissions: Top 10% Guaranteed: No minimum SAT/ACT score, DAP Graduation HS plan. (6% for UT-Austin 2019-2020 school year!). Quartile Rank& SAT/ACT test scores

What to look for when researching College Admissions: • Admission Deadlines: When is their priority deadline & regular admission deadline? • Scholarship Deadlines: When are their scholarship deadlines? How are scholarships applied for? Separate applications or combined with the university application? • SAT/ACT scores: What is their average incoming freshman have for SAT/ACT ?; Do they have automatic admission and/or scholarships associated with SAT/ACT scores? • GPA requirements & High School Diploma requirements? (Distinguished, Foundation, Recommended?) What is the average incoming freshman GPA- automatic admissions associated with Class Rank and correlating SAT/ACT scores. • OTHER: Essays? Letters of Recommendation? Interview? Short Answer questions? ZeeMee Profile?

Sneak Peak at College Admissions • University of Texas at Austin • Priority Application Deadline: November 1st • Regular Application Deadline: December 1st. • General Scholarships Application: Automatic with Apply Texas App- Must select Scholarships application! Application- needed by December 1st . - Additional scholarships on website. Automatic Admissions: Top 6% for Fall 2020 ; 50K Applications for 8,500 spots! ApplyTexas application SAT/ACT scores (Average Incoming Freshman 1390 SAT / 33 ACT) AP Scores/ Dual Credit transcripts/ IB Official HS Transcript Essay A on Apply Texas + 3 Short Answers Resume, Letters of recommendation (Through student portal), Departmental Requirements! Engineering, Fine Arts, Geoscience, Nursing, Natural Science, etc.

Texas State University • Application deadline: March 1st • Scholarship Deadline: December 15th *Separate Application* Automatic Admissions: • Rank top 10% • 1st Quartile 1000SAT / 20ACT • 2nd Quartile 1090SAT / 22 ACT • 3rd Quartile 1250 SAT / 26 ACT • 4th Quartile 1330 SAT/ 29 ACT ApplyTexas application • SAT / ACT scores (Will Super Score: Take highest test results from either test date) - AP Scores/ Dual Credit transcripts/ IB - Official HS Transcript • Essay (Optional but Recommended) • McCoy College of Business additional requirements.

  16. TESTING?! • Use PSAT results to prep for the SAT on College Board. • Take FREE SAT & ACT practice tests. Students might test differently. • SAT = Collegeboard.org ; ACT = Act.org • Take both & multiple (Once Junior Year and again August/September of Senior Year). • Admissions does NOT prefer one over the other. Scores are what matters. • Always check the universities admissions webpage for any specific SAT subject tests and ACT science/STEM requirements.

Degree Plans> What are they and why are they important? • ALL Universities/ Community Colleges & Technical schools have degree plans for EVERY major. • Degree Plan: An outline of all courses required for a specific degree. • In college you have LOTS of choices for course, you need to align your classes with your degree plan. • Can not graduate with out taking ALL required courses for your degree! • Let’s take a closer look!
