  3. Bimetallism • Exchange paper money for Gold or Silver • Supported by Democrats & Populists • Farmers, Labors • Nominated William Jennings Bryan • Bimetallism lead to: • Put money into circulation • Deflation • Prices go up

  4. Gold Standard • Exchange paper money just for gold: • Supported by Republicans • Bankers and Businessmen • Nominated William McKinley • Gold Standard lead to: • Put less money into circulation • Inflation • Prices go down

  5. William Jennings Bryan • Former House of Representative he was known as a great speaker, which made him popular. • Main issue was currency. • “Cross of Gold” Speech: Supported bimetallism or free silver which he believed would bring the nation prosperity. • Decried the gold standard would “crucify mankind upon a cross of gold” • Push him to the Democratic nomination.

  6. William McKinley Focused on the power of Big Business. Republican Party was afraid for their jobs and because they did not support an inflationary monetary policy that would raise the price of good. Farmers and workers were unsuccessful in using the democratic process to solve their economic problems in the 19th century because they failed to appeal to the growing middle class.
