TRY AND BE FUNNY WITH SMART ANSWERS 5.GIVE UP – the point of a reading exam is that the answer is there somewhere! 6. DON’T LEAVE GAPS! at least have an educated guess!

S T I G S SEARCH Look for synonyms throughout texts based on the topic SCAN Scan a text for specific info: this involves finding the answer to a question as quickly as you can by picking out key and/or relevant words IGNORE Don’t try and understand every word –ignoring excess words to get at the overall meaning is a key skill for reading GUESS Try and guess words you don’t know: does it look like any English word? Does it look like another French word? Make associations THINK Anticipate the context and the content of the text based on the topic area: What words do you know which may appear?

Pronouncing French words: Why is it so hard? • All languages are based and built upon letter strings and combinations which build the sounds required to pronounce the language. • With your native language, your mouth becomes accustomed to a certain group of letter strings and hence finds a new set of rules hard to get its tongue around. • That’s why foreigners have an accent when they speak English and you have an accent when trying to pronounce French.

  17. RULES FOR BETTER FRENCH ‘H’ is almost always silent French (that’s why the French find it so ‘ard to pronounce in English!) Generally, never pronounce the last letter of a word in French CH is pronounced SH Raising the tone of your voice ( not the volume!) at the end of a phrase infers that you are asking a question
