  1. As you lead your crew to success, remember Failure Is NOT an Option

  2. Chapter 1Why Failure Is NOT an Option • Although students may fail, the consequences are too devastating to allow for such an option. • High school drop-outs earn substantially less wages than graduates. • High school drop-outs have far greater rates of incarceration. • High school drop-outs have far greater rates of drug abuse.

  3. Ties between a Strong Public Education System & Democracy • Schools are for the common good. • Schools are the gateway to economic and life success for underserved children. • Education is the LAST level playing field the students who attend them will ever have.

  4. What is your moral purpose? • Who are you as a leader? • Why are you here? • How do you fulfill your purpose?

  5. Lesson 1Ideas Have Consequences • Know what you want • Be able to clarify and articulate your intentions • If your team agrees that success is the only option for your students, then actions and structures must come together to support the agreement of a “no-fail school.”

  6. Lesson 2The Marathon Starts Before the Race Begins • Step 1 – Clarifying Intentions and Desired Methodology • Step 2 – Self-Assessment • Step 3 – Assuring Readiness • Step 4 – Building Successful School Teams

  7. Lesson 3Relational Trust Trumps Technique • Without relational trust, there will be no student achievement gains. • Leaders must rely more heavily on face-to-face relationships. • Relationships must be built among people in the organization. • Relational trust is not “singing Kumbaya” or taking trust walks in the woods.

  8. Lesson 4School Culture is Queen (and King!) • Ultimately a school’s culture has more influence on life and learning than anything else. • What symbolizes your school culture?

  9. Lesson5The Answer Is in the Room – Networks Work • Networking is one of the most promising strategies for sustainable improvement in education. • Constructive networks facilitate knowledge among educators within a geographical region. • Networks go beyond a site Leadership Team to an entire district and beyond.

  10. Lesson 6FNO Is a System and Framework for Action • Having a common framework for action helps schools: • Scale up and bring new people on board. • Focus the effort and avoid initiative overload. • Create synergies and cohesion across the district.

  11. Failure Is NEVER an Option
