  1. 6 Primary Characteristics Of Modern Architecture When people hear about modern architecture, they often automatically think about state- of-art buildings with lavish and futuristic designs. Others think of it the same way as they do with a contemporary design. The terms modern architecture and contemporary architecture are often interchangeably used. While the words “modern” and “contemporary” both refer to the present-day trends, in the world of architecture, they signify different meanings. Contemporary Architecture vs Modern Architecture Contemporary architecture is an architectural design that refers to present-day buildings that feature innovative techniques and styles that are different from the past or from what

  2. has already been designed and built in the past. It often features state-of-the-art materials, glass, and metal. Modern architecture, on the other end, is not an architectural design. But rather, it is a 20th-century historic movement that emerged in Europe and later became popular around the world after World War II. It is about an era that has passed. It adopted the principle design that is based on cold logic, minimalism, form follows function, and the used of relatively new building materials. Primary Characteristics of a Modern Architecture The modern architecture features structures that give more emphasis on volume than on massing. Here are some features and characteristics that signify that a building structure is modern architecture. Minimalist design Modern architects in Austin believe in the concept of less is more. Modern architecture pursues a minimalist approach to designing a building that is driven by both aesthetics and function. Modernist buildings are designed with minimum elements and with no excessive elements or ornamentation. Nature-less and culture-less Modern residential architects embrace industrial order, science, and technology instead of nature and culture. Massive glass windows and a generous amount of natural light With modern architecture, windows are not just a meter-wide porthole to the outside. One characteristic of modern architecture is the use of massive glass windows that stretch from the floor up to the ceiling. This does not only provide dramatic views of the outside but also allows the entry of a generous amount of natural light to the interior of the building.

  3. Justice and truth of materials Instead of plastering the materials or covering them up with other artificial ornamental materials like paint, a modern architect in Austin uses stain to enhance the beauty of the materials and at the same time express their natural character. Wood materials, for instance, are stained to express and emphasize their character and texture. Lack of moldings or ornament Modern architecture promotes the idea of justice and truth to the construction materials used to build the structure. Instead of simply plastering or ornamenting the materials with some artificial materials, modern architects in Austin create a design that aims to reflect what is inside to the outside. It does not include any elaborate trim or decorative moldings. Modern architecture is greatly simplified which makes it look and feel aesthetically clean. Shapes emphasize rectangular forms Residential houses that adopt modern architecture come in shapes that give emphasis on rectangular forms as well as vertical and horizontal lines like linked boxes or based boxes.

  4. A residential architect in Austin often chooses materials that are used in well-defined planes and verticals. For more dramatic effects, they are juxtaposed against some horizontal elements. The components are mostly positioned at 90 degrees or perpendicular to each other.
