  2. Who is a refugee? • A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. • Two-thirds of all refugees worldwide come from just five countries: Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar and Somalia. (UNHCR)

  4. EMPATHY: in someone else’s shoes Activity: Everything is crumbling around you and you only have 60 seconds to pack up before you flee. What 5 things would you take with you? “These items that refugees bring with them become bittersweet symbols of home and hope-they connect them to the life they’ve loved and ache to regain one day.” (MercyCorps). What do refugees bring with them?

  5. EMPATHY: in someone else’s shoes Activity: Pick someone in your class who speaks another language and ask him/her to translate the story (see next page for text) in their language. The other children listen to the story of a refugee in another language and try to understand what the person is saying by looking at his/her drawings and body movements. Discussion: How does it feel to speak a different language to everyone else? How does it feel to listen to someone speak and not understand? Was it hard to guess what the person was saying?

  8. Travel somewhere you’ve never been before through the power of beautiful music. Simple acts Join the movement of people who welcome refugees. Write your own poem about something that matters to you and that it would be difficult to live without e.g family Share the stories of refugees with people around you. Can you find a story of migration in your family or community that you didn’t know before? Do you know where your name comes from, and what it means? Find and share one fact about refugees through history that you didn’t know before.
