  4. The progress report The results of 10th board examination were announced in the newspaper .Jose ,the Grandson of Mr. Maths , brought his mark sheet from his school. His parents and his grandfather were not at home. Mrs. Maths who saw her grandson entering the house with a sullen face said , ” Jose , show me your mark sheet ; what is the total percentage?” Jose replied as follows:”I have got cent percent in Maths. But the total marks are only 72%. Social pulled me down. I have scored very little m arks. In French, I got 20 marks more that what I got in Social Science. In English, I got 20 marks more than what I got in French. In Science, I got 20marks more than what I got in English. You can calculate my marks in each subject.” Grandma was puzzled. Can you help her find the marks.

  5. Answer Total percentage 72 for five subjects. That means: Total marks are 360 out of 500. In Maths , he got 100. If social science mark is x, French = x+20,English=x+20+20,Science=x+20+20+20. i.e., Social+French+English+Science=4x+120=360-100 ,x=35.

  6. Friends Tony,Ronnie and Michael were three friends working together. They had reserved their berths by a superfast train to go home for Christmas. They saw their old teacher Mr. George sitting in the train. Tony had bought 8 biscuits,Ronnie 9 biscuits and Michael 11 biscuits. When the train left the 3 friends shared their supper with their teacher. So the total 28 biscuits was divided among 4 of them. Afterwards, Mr. George bought 4 bananas at Re. 1/- each and gave one to each. After finishing he gave them Rs.11/- for his share after deducting the money for their share of banana’s. A problem cropped up dividing Rs.11/- among 3 friends.

  7. This is how the teacher helped them divide the money: Total biscuits 28 (Tony 8,Ronnie 9,Michael 11) Bananas(George 4) Four shared the biscuits. So each gets 7.Each gets one banana.Mr. George actually paid Rs.11/- for his share after deducting Rs.3 which is due for 3 bananas. So he actually paid Rs.14/-.The 3 friends will get their share in the ratio (8-7,9-7,11-7),i.e, 1:2:4, which gives Tony Rs.2,Ronnie Rs.4 and Michael Rs. 8. After deducting Re.1/- for the banana from each’s share, they get: Tony Re.1, Ronnie Rs.3 and Michael Rs.7 which totals to Rs.11/-.

  8. Winningat marbles Problem: Dravid and Gopal each had a certain number of playing marbles. Dravid lost a game to Gopal and had to give half of his marbles. In the 2nd game, Gopal lost and had to give 3/4th of his marbles to Dravid, who now had 30 marbles. Finally,in the 3rd game, Gopal won and acquired some of Dravid’smarbles. Now, each boy had exactly the number of marbles he had started with and Dravid had twice as many marbles as Gopal. How many marbles did each have in the beginning?

  9. Solution: No. of marbles Gopal had = g No. of marbles Dravid had=d So, d=2g. After 1st game, Dravid had d/2 and Gopal had g+d/2. After 2nd game, Dravid had d/2+3/4(g+d/2)=30. Since, d=2g, substituting g for d/2, We get g+3/4(g+g)=30 • g=12, Hence • d=2g=12x2=24. Hence , Gopal had 12 marbles and Dravid had 24 marbles.

  10. The city bus • Mr. Ravi boarded the bus at Majestic Bus stand early in the morning to reach his house at Electronic city. After he reached home, he told his wife that at every stop,4 persons got out and 3 persons got into the bus. When it reached the tenth stop,i.e Electronic city all the 4 occupants vacated the bus.He questioned her, whether she could find out how many passengers were there when it left Majestic Bus Stand.

  11. Answer Mrs. Ravi replies Passengers when it started at Majestic=x Each stop 4 got down and 3 got in, means 1 person less for each stop for 9 stops. 9 persons less, at the 10th stop 4 persons got down and the bus went empty. So, x-9=4, • X = 13. Therefore, passengers in the bus when it left Majestic bus stand were 13. Isn’t Mrs. Ravi brilliant.

  12. The Two Clocks There were two electronic clocks in Smitha’s house. One clock losing 5 minutes and the other gains 5 mts everyday. Smitha’s father set the clock right when it was 12 noon. He asked her,”When will the two clocks show the right time at 12 noon again, if they follow the same pattern,i.e one clock losing 5 mts and the other gaining 5 mts everyday?”

  13. Answer: Smitha replies: One clock loses 5 minutes One clock gains 5 minutes So, for a day the difference is 10 minutes. For 60 minutes,it will take 6 days. For 24 hours,(24x60)/10 = 144 days. Therefore, on completion of 144 days, both the clocks will show correct time at 12 noon.
