Introduction Physical activity (Winsley and Armstrong, 2005) = Complex Variable Consists of unavoidability and variable activity! Accurate assessment very difficult! Any bodily movement resulting in energy expenditure
Recommended physical activity levels • 60 mins moderate to vigorous (DH, 2005, DH, 2011, WHO, 2010) • NHS (2011) at least an hour plus 3 days muscle and bone strengthening activities • Possible in playtime, travelling to school and Physical Education lessons.
Yes, but…. No curriculum guidance on what sustained activity is…. So how do we record physical activity? What does moderate to vigorous look like? Can physical activity be more than just movement at a moderate to vigorous level?
What PA looks like? Playing and exploring Active learning – being active and interactive with others Moving and handling Negotiating space Developing control, confidence, coordination of own body movements Health choices related to food
Place for physical activity Opportunistic Structured Consider questions used / phrases to support and encourage PA. Use of modes of transport Use of small and large equipment
Conclusion Complex variable! Many opportunities Recognising when PA occurs Knowing how to progress – active role models, development of key vocab Don’t be afraid of the outdoors.
