  2. What is the scope? • 32.9 million bushels of dry beans produced in U.S. in 2001 (bad year) • 100 million bushels of lentils/yr produced worldwide • Many varieties

  3. What is the customer need? • Harvested lentils must be sorted from chaff • Lentils must be separated on size and quality • ‘Good’ lentils get 10-12 cents per bushel • ‘Bad’ lentils get 2 cents per bushel

  4. Proposed Solution • For air: (rvA)1 = (rvA)2 • Assume Dr = 0 • Therefore: (vA)1 = (vA)2 • From geometry: A = p(htanq)2 • Therefore v1h12 = v2h22 • v1/v2 = (h2/h1)2 • Based on our values of v, we find h2/h1 = 1.011 A2 h2 A1 h1 Compressed Air

  5. Proposed Solution • “Good” lentils = 772 kg/m^3 • “Bad” lentils = 709 kg/m^3 • From K. Carman: • Vt = 10.79 +.04Mc • Bd=1212 - 8.94Mc Equating and solving for Bd yields: Vt, good = 12.76 m/s Vt, bad = 13.04 m/s This does not make sense! Chaff ∆s ∆h Good Lentils Bad Lentils Compressed Air

  6. Existing Product • Vibrating air tables • Sorts lentils with a maximum capacity rate of 500 bushels per hour Source: http://www.olivermfgco.com/master.htm
