  7. Stop Smoking • Smoking cessation support • Exercise • By 5 years of stopping the risk of heart attack is halved • By 10 years the risk is equal to someone who has never smoked

  8. Reduce cholesterol levels • Total cholesterol <4 • LDL <2 HDL >1.0 • Triglycerides <2 • Healthy diet • Exercise • Medication • Reduce weight

  9. Control blood pressure • Increases CHD risk by 3 • Aim <140/85 or 130/80 in diabetics • Diet • Exercise • Medication • Regular monitoring

  10. Obesity • Increases heart disease risk times 4 & reduces life expectancy by 9 years • Weight loss should be encouraged if BMI >29.9 due to effect on all risk factors • Risk is higher if fat is deposited around the abdomen

  11. Inactivity • Lack of exercise increases risk of first heart attack by 2.4 • Moderate exercise every day can reduce MI by up to 50% • Exercise has a beneficial affect on all risk factors, it reduces stress, blood pressure, weight, cholesterol , angina and breathlessness

  12. Diabetes • Increases the risk of heart attack by 3 times • Diet • Smoking cessation • Exercise • Medication • Well controlled
