Design of Civil Engineering Systems Course objectives The course is designed to give the students the necessary knowledge and practical training in the implementation of multi-disciplinary engineering project in the field of Civil Engineering in partnership with the local community in a team environment. Design of Civil Engineering Systems CE A438 Course Description Capstone course in which civil engineering students collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams to design a complex civil engineering system that meets client needs while protecting public health and safety using knowledge and skills learned in their undergraduate curriculum. Design of Civil Engineering Systems Student Learning Outcomes • Ability to identify problems and opportunities, develop related engineering design criteria, and formulate alternative solutions to meet client needs while protecting public health and safety using knowledge and skills learned in the civil engineering undergraduate curriculum • Ability to function effectively on multi-disciplinary teams engaged in collaborative and iterative design of a complex civil engineering system with conflicting technical, social, economic, and aesthetic objectives • Understanding of the professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities of practicing civil engineers • Recognition of the need for and ability to engage in life-long learningin the context of civil engineering professional practice • Ability to communicate effectively with engineering drawings and technical visualizations, construction specifications, written technical reports, and public oral presentations O. Design of Civil Engineering Systems Class Deliverables • Interim draft, final draft, and final Design Study Report (DSR) including (group work): o Descriptions of investigations, analyses, and findings o Evaluation of alternatives o Recommendations • Construction plans for recommended alternative, approximately 20 to 65 % detail depending on project nature (group work) O. Design of Civil Engineering Systems Formal presentation 27 April 2012 All students in the course will participate in a formal presentation of investigations, findings, analyses, illustrations, designs, evaluations, and recommendations at a venue to be determined. NSH Alternative - Elevated Highway ELEVATED EXPRESSWAY * Continuously elevated lanes running atop bridgework supported in the center median of the current NSH (E) NSH (E) NSH • Elevated expressway would dominate the skyline and block panoramic views of the Chugach Mountains east of the city. • Snow removal would be difficult. • Expensive to build. NSH Alternative – Depressed Cross Street New Seward Highway * Major cross-streets to pass beneath NSH Cross Streets Depth -36th Avenue -Benson Blvd -Northern Lights -Fireweed (varies) • The steep walled nature of each depression would result in loss of access to businesses adjacent to NSH and for a significant distance along the length of each cross-street Civil Engineering Department

  16. NSH Design Cross Streets * NSH would be depressed with cross streets to remain at current grade Depth (~ 24 or 25’) Frontage Frontage Main Hwy – 3 lanes ea. (Northbound/Southbound) (2 lanes) (2 lanes) • Neither NSH nor the cross-street bridges would rise above grade to present an unpleasant industrial aspect or conflict with suspended utility lines • Future expansion would be easily attained due to the wide central median and lane space on the collector roads Civil Engineering Department

  17. 36th Avenue Alternative Requires one set of Traffic lights at intersection NSH * Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) 36th Ave 36th Ave WEST EAST NSH • Allows opposing left turns to proceed simultaneously by compressing the two intersections of a diamond into one single intersection • No significant improvement in traffic flow in this intersection with the design traffic load Civil Engineering Department

  18. 36th Avenue Alternative * Partial Cloverleaf ( Parclo ) • Uses arrangement of loops and signalized ramps as needed for effective traffic flow • Requires more land than other options • Negative impact to local business due to Old Seward change to One- Way • No significant improvement of traffic flow when modeled Civil Engineering Department

  19. 36th Avenue Alternative • Double Diamond Intersection • Traffic switches sides across bridge • Allows smooth transitions between freeway and cross-streets • Performs well at projected traffic levels • Requires minimum expansion of ROW Civil Engineering Department
