NatHERS Whole Home Rating_ Everything You Need To Know

If you work in the construction industry in Australia, you must have heard the terms "7-star energy ratings" or "7-star buildings." Previously, the minimum star requirement for NatHERS Assessment was 6, which has now been updated to 7. How does a single star make a difference and how much? Check out this article to learn more:

  1. NatHERS Whole Home Rating: Everything You Need To Know Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme, provides popularly known as NatHERS, offers energy performance ratings for new residential structures. NatHERS rating promotes the development of energy-efficient, resilient and comfortable homes designed for the future that cost less to operate and maintain. From September 2022, NatHERS underwent certain upgrades to provide world-leading measurement tools for the residential building sector. The upgrades aim to support the move to net zero emissions by 2050. Upgrades in NatHERS Assessment and Certificate ● The new NatHERS Scheme can is now eligible for rating the energy performance of the whole home. This includes all major energy-powered appliances and installed solar power system, in addition to the star rating for the building shell. ● Apart from the whole home rating, the minimum star rating was also increased. Under the new scheme, the minimum star rating for new houses and apartments will increase from 6 to 7 (out of 10).

  2. In NSW, NatHERS is an integral part of the BASIX certificate. What is the whole home rating? The Whole Home Rating considers energy used for heating and cooling and other major appliances used within the residential structure minus energy generated by a solar power system. With NatHERS Whole of Home ratings, project developers, residents, or owners can easily demonstrate how the residential structure meets or performs beyond the new NCC annual energy use budget. In addition to the current NatHERS assessment providing 1-10 star ratings, the Whole of Home Performance Rating will embody a separate rating out of 100. The new energy assessment builds on the thermal performance assessment by considering information about the energy consumption of the following appliances: ● ● ● ● ● ● Heating and cooling Systems installed for hot water Artificial lighting fixtures Pool or spa pump equipment Cooking and plug-in appliances Onsite energy generation (solar panel) and storage. Although the rating scale of Whole of Home rating ranges from 1 to 100 (where 100 denotes a net zero energy value residential structure), ratings can also go beyond 100. This is possible when a residential dwelling generates more energy than it uses. Also read: BASIX Certificate: An Insightful Guide Why NatHERS introduced Whole of Home Assessments? NatHERS expanded beyond providing a rating thermal performance. The Whole of Home energy use allows determining a dwelling’s major fixed appliances and any onsite power generation. NatHERS software was updated to support the new National Construction Code (NCC) energy efficiency requirements. NatHERS upgrades were done due to the following reasons:

  3. Help consumers to make informed and more effective decisions about the energy performance of their homes and appliances, thus reducing energy consumption and financial expenditure over time. A streamlined and cost-effective approach empowers relevant stakeholders to demonstrate compliance with the National Construction Code and create resilient and sustainable structures. Design low energy use residential structures supports Australia’s move to net zero emissions by 2050. ● ● Ensure to get your NatHERS and BASIX certificate prepared by experienced building professionals to avoid any errors and complexities in the project workflow. How Is Whole Home Rating Calculated? NCC’s energy value metric dictates the Whole of Home rating system. The energy value encompasses ● Cost of energy consumption for home uses, ● Cost to the energy network ● Cost of the greenhouse gas/carbon emissions resulting from the home’s energy use. The energy consumption is a sum total of the home’s thermal performance and major appliances, subtracting the offsets due to onsite renewable energy generation and storage. While The Whole of Home rating scale ranges from 1 to 100. A rating of 1 indicates extremely poor energy performance. Rating100 is a net zero energy value home. As mentioned previously, a rating beyond 100 is possible where the dwelling produces more energy than it consumes. Wrapping Up Sustainability and efficiency are the futurist solutions to curb the worsening climate change and global warming concerns. Efficient buildings also have a higher market price.
