  4. History of the Brooke – over 75 years! • Founded in 1934 by Dorothy Brooke • Ex-cavalry horses sold into life of hard labour after WW1 ended in 1918 • Raised £20,000 to help end suffering of these once proud horses and mules

  5. History of the Brooke – over 75 years! • Bought 5,000 old horses and mules • Local horses and donkeys, were also desperately in need • Cairo Old War Horse Memorial Hospital

The Brooke Today • UK’s leading overseas working equine welfare charity • Mission • ‘to alleviate the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules working in the poorest parts of the world, and to improve the lives of the poor communities who depend upon them’ • Reached over 1.17 million working animals last year

  9. The Need – The Animals • The issues: • Poor feeding/malnutrition • Heat exhaustion/thirst • No veterinary care or knowledge • Poor shoeing • Disease • Road accidents • Overloaded/overworked

  12. The Need – The People • It is estimated that the 1.17 million animals that the Brooke reached last year benefited 7 million people • These animals support some of the world’s poorest people, who rely on their animals for their livelihoods

  13. The Approach - Research • University of Bristol’s School of Veterinary Science • Observational research provides data which tells us more about problems locally and their cause • Effective advice to animal owners and local people

  14. The Approach - Overseas • Over 1000 skilled staff working in the field • Only employ people from the country of operation

Where Will The Money Go? • £7.16 could help us reach one more hardworking horse or donkey • £10 could pay for anti-rabies vaccinations for 20 hardworking horses and donkeys • £30 could pay to train a community animal health worker, who will work with communities to improve animal welfare • £40 could pay for a vet for a day, who will treat sick and injured horses and donkeys, and train their owners.
