  12. Functional Specs • Plug, cable and protocol and processor-to-protocol converter must conform to SAE standards • User input - 4 buttons providing the modes : • Read DTCs and Ams -- Erase codes • Save codes -- Retrieve saved codes • Processor - 68HC11 • Storage memory - 4 MB flash card • LCD display- 40 characters per line and ten lines, backlight • Enclosure – measurements: 4” X 3” X 2” It must be rugged and secure as to prevent damage to the inside, outside and plug

  14. Scope • Only 1995 and newer cars and light trucks • Supports OBD II protocol only • Not a mechanics substitute • Not a common sense substitute • Not supercede owners manual

  15. Milestones • Milestone 1(Functional Spec complete) All the hardware is defined and available within estimated price range to build PVDI • Milestone 2 (Database Completion) Database for the output message will be finished for reviewing of the lawyer and mechanic • Milestone 3(Prototype I) Individual software component completion • Milestone 4 (Prototype II) Hardware and software components put together

  16. Prototype I

  17. Contracts • All contracts include project plan, objectives, scope, functional components, functional specs, and schedule as part of contract • Contacts and deadlines • Specific remedies for violations • Spirit of cooperation and communication

  18. Risk Mitigation • Property damage & personal injury liabilities • Competition • Contractor/supplier delays • OBDIII changes • Patent

  19. Has this been done before? • The PVDI is portable • Gives descriptive messages • Gives priority numbers to codes • Is easy to use • Theirs is extremely complicated – useless for average consumer NO

  20. Contractor Budget

  21. Consulting Budget

  22. Hardware Budget $168.00 at per item retail but if purchases in 5,000 quantity = $100 Per item manufacturing, packaging, distribution = $40

  35. ODB 3 • Sophisticated sensors, monitoring telemetry and emissions • Fourth Amendment Issues • Uses transmitters to send data to satellites • Coupled with GPS = gov can find your car • Rat you out! “The specter of having Big Brother in every engine compartment and driving a vehicle that rats on itself anytime it pollutes is not one that would appeal to many motorists.” • http://www.me.umn.edu/~byronr/vw/obd3.txt Lary Carley
