  1. Section III Expand Your Horizon Golden Retriever The Golden retriever is a large,strongly-built breed with a dense water-repellant wavy coat. They were bred as gun dogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties, and were named retrievers because of their ability to retrieve shot game undamaged.

  2. Section III Expand Your Horizon As dogs with origins in pedigree breeding, and due to their widespread historical popularity, some regional variations in the breed have emerged; therefore, there are three sub-types of the golden retriever that reflect the typical variations in dimensions and coats.

  3. Section III Expand Your Horizon As indicated by their name, their coats vary from light golden to dark golden colors. The topcoat is water-resistant and slightly wavy, and sheds in small amounts throughout the year. The undercoat is soft and keeps the retriever cool in summer and warm in winter. It usually lies flat against the belly. The Golden’s coat should never be too long, as this may prove to be a disservice to it in the field, especially when it is in a retrieving game.

  4. Section III Expand Your Horizon The dog sheds copiously, particularly at the change of seasons, so it requires fairly regular grooming. They should be groomed at least once a week, and every day during heavy shedding. They should be bathed every two months.

  5. Section III Expand Your Horizon Golden retrievers are noted for their intelligence. The breed is a prominent participant in conformation shows for purebred dogs. Golden retrievers’ intelligence makes them a versatile breed and allows them to fit a variety of roles—guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf, hunting dogs, detection dogs, search and rescue participants.

  6. Section III Expand Your Horizon The temperament of the golden retriever is a hallmark of the breed, and is described in the standard as “kindly, friendly and confident”. Golden retrievers make good family pets, particularly because they are patient with children. They are not “one-man dogs” and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them.

  7. Section III Expand Your Horizon Their trusting, gentle disposition makes them poor guard dogs. Their temperament has also made them the third most popular family dog breed(by registration)in the United States, the fifth most popular in Australia, and the eighth most popular in the United Kingdom.

  8. Section III Expand Your Horizon Typical golden retrievers are calm, naturally intelligent and biddable, and with an exceptional eagerness to please. They are also active and fun-loving animals with the exceptionally patient demeanour befitting a dog bred to sit quietly for hours in a hunting blind. Adult Goldens love to work, and have a keen ability to focus on a given task.

  9. Section III Expand Your Horizon Golden retrievers are rarely choosy eaters, but require ample exercise (of two or more hours a day). The breed is fond of play but also highly trainable. They are easy to train to meet basic or advanced obedience standards. Golden retrievers are well suited to residency in suburban or country environments.

  10. Section III Expand Your Horizon Although they need substantial outdoor exercise, they should be housed in a fenced area because of their instinctual tendency to roam. The average life span for a golden retriever is about 11 to 12.5 years. Golden retrievers are susceptible to specific ailments. They should be taken to a veterinarian for yearly checkups.

  11. Section III Expand Your Horizon The golden retriever is considered one of the most intelligent dog breed in the world. They are exceptionally trainable due to their intelligence, athleticism and desire to please their handlers.

  12. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  13. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  14. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  15. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  16. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  17. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  18. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  19. Section III Expand Your Horizon

  20. Section III Expand Your Horizon
